But if it's all just an image - which I'm sure everybody, including Lady Gaga herself, would agree it pretty much is - then surely her private self is basically irrelevant?

(Anonymous) 2011-12-30 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Haha. This. Her career flopped when she was "Stefani Germanotta"

I think she extent of her "bi-ness" is that she's probably kissed a couple of girls in the past and considers herself bi because of it. But I certainly don't think she's actually bi. And I hate how she fetisizes homosexuality in her songs/videos.

[identity profile] relmneiko.livejournal.com 2011-12-30 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
I think that's a pretty broad assumption to make. You have no idea what Gaga's actually done or what she identifies as privately. She could be bi and taking advantage of it for marketing or she could be faking it all the way. But I think assuming she's faking it is stupid as hell. Speaking as another bi girl used to having people not believe me because lol I just want attention from boys and I'm faking it, apparently

Also: So you'd rather she fetishize heterosexuality like every other pop music video out there? Sex sells, and if she can sell gay sex... that's progressive, isn't it? Isn't there a good message of love and pride and whatever in there somewhere?

If a virgin can consider herself straight, then anyone else can consider himself bisexual. You don't have to be sexually involved with a certain gender to know you are sexually attracted to that gender.

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2011-12-30 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
On one hand, I think when people* self-identify, you should respect that identification. On the other hand, marketing is such a huge factor in just about anything that it's hard for me to dismiss the effects that marketing has on creating a celebrity's image.

*"People" in this case meaning non-fiction people as opposed to fictional characters created by others. How much of this counts for Lady Gaga's image, though, is still up for discussion.

smh.

[identity profile] haro.livejournal.com 2011-12-30 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
You do realize that she first said she was bi over three years ago? Back before she was really popular at all, and back before she'd really established a public image?

[identity profile] oflittlebrain.livejournal.com 2011-12-30 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
ah yes it's really important not to believe people when they say they're not straight. this is a very progressive move on your part, good for you.

I just wanted to say this comment is fantastic because it both 1) made me laugh, and 2) made an excellent point. ^_^b

+1

and well said, too

(Anonymous) 2011-12-30 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
just like it's super important not to call it out when people are fetishizing queers, too.

For me, I just don't believe it from gaga, and just her. Otherwise I believe people who say they are bi. But then again, I have trouble believing anything from my-whole-persona-is-a-marketing-gimmick-gaga.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-30 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you. Regardless of the truth, the speculation causes more harm than good.

I think Gaga was probably always a feminist, because I really don't see her not believing in equal rights for women. I get the feeling that she fell into the 'feminist means those people burning bras' idea (that made a point for it's time, but out of context looks even crazier) that has been constructed by the straw feminist in fiction (and some crazies in real life). And then she probably got tens of thousands of letters/emails/whatever slamming her for it, which caused a 'oops!' moment.

As for the bi, I always give people the benefit of the doubt. Of course, I also see Gaga as a brilliant business person rather than a artist (if you sit down to create with the very first thought being 'what will be a hit/sell?' I get hives calling you a artist), so I don't really feel betrayed/whatever by her in any other situation. I respect her for her business sense and catchy-as-hell tunes. She is great to her fans. To claim she is a liar about personal things is going over the top, I think.

I find it annoying that people get second guessed about their stated sexuality, and I find the stereotype "bisexual = attention whore" offensive.

Bisexuals exist. Why read some kind of idiotic agenda into it.

It's always felt to me that the whole 'feminist' thing was Gaga only assuming feminism was what unfortunately how the media usually portrays it. And she educated herself more on it. I mean, I wasn't lucky as to be raised a feminist and so I thought feminism as "crazy ladies." It was only when I got called out on that thinking and started reading more on that I became a vocal feminist myself.

I can't really argue about her sexuality. Ultimately it's she that knows what she is.

[identity profile] iteari.livejournal.com 2011-12-30 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
This secret is rubbing me the wrong way. It's a bit biphobic, where you're saying that because you disagree with her music, her as a person, a product, you write off what she has to say about her sexuality. It's a lot to the tone of "you're not bi, you're just a whore!"

Why don't you just criticize her on how she does her music and persona instead of something no one but her can actually know?

[identity profile] xenafox.livejournal.com 2011-12-30 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
The fuck? Let her identify how she identifies. We scream this enough for normal people, because she's a celebrity doesn't make her exempt from common courtesy.

And if she's marketing it? ...Okay? People market heterosexuality. People market homosexuality, gender, color, fff everything. Geez. Bisexuality doesn't need to be stuffed away or raised above everything.

[identity profile] phaethon.livejournal.com 2011-12-30 06:32 am (UTC)(link)
Identity policing is fun.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-30 06:49 am (UTC)(link)
As far as I know (and this is from lurking around fan comms, so I can't point you to any specific article right now), she's said that she educated herself about feminism and identifies as one now, which makes sense, and that she's had sexual relationships with women but not romantic ones - again, that makes sense, and I think she has a right to call herself bi because of that. Sure, both are publicized for marketing purposes, but that doesn't mean they're not true.

[identity profile] xerxes92.livejournal.com 2011-12-30 08:03 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, fuck lady gaga! I mean, first she uses the sexiness of girl on girl in a song to gain fame, then writes a song using gay as a derogatory term, and then she writes her little gay anthem song what a fucking hypocrite! Oh.. wait... that's Katy Perry.

Lady Gaga may be pretending to be bi, she may even pretend to care about the gay community, but at least she's fucking consistent about pretending she is.

I also fail to see what's wrong with her doing stuff in order to make it sell. Oh no, someone who's livelihood depends on popularity doing things to become popular? Monster! I personally do believe she means it, though. I mean, look at the Alejandro video, do you really think she did that because she thought it was gonna be super-popular, or the edge of glory video, she was just doing what the fuck she wanted to with those. Also note that not a single video since telephone has had product placement in it, and let's be honest, product placement really worked with that video. Though saying this is really quite pointless, if you think Gaga's a fake and absolutely hate her for it, nothing is going to change your mind about it because you're already dead-set on the assumption.

And I don't know the deal bout the feminist thing, but there are tons of people who say "I'm all for equal rights amount the sexes... but I'm not a feminist." Our media has given feminism a bad name via the straw feminist we see so often.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-31 06:19 am (UTC)(link)
Because Lady Gaga =/= Stefani Germanotta. Lady Gaga is a troll to the media and masses. Only her closest friends and family really know the real Stefani.
