However, I love Shitsurakuen. Sora is amazing and all of her princesses are beautiful, especially since most of them go through interesting transitions.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-02 06:37 pm (UTC)(link)Well, there are a lot of similar with Utena, like the drawing of weapons from bodies, a girl wanted to be a price (or in Shitsurakuen, a knight), the heroine being innocent and wanting to save everyone, Kaharu being not what she appears to be (not unlike Anthy). Obviously there are a lot of differences though.
I found Shisurakuen's ending to be disappointing, though. It felt like it had so much potential and then the end was just, 'nope, Kaharu's a maniac, the end.' I'm glad at least not ALL of the guys were redeemed in the end though.

Tsuki was one of favorites until she went psycho.I KNOW! The end was getting climatic and then all of a sudden--the end. I just stared at the screen like, wtf. It could have gone much further. There were a few storylines that could have been made, in my opinion. I feel like it was right for some of the guys not to understand still. It would have felt like a Disney ending, tbh.
But, I did love how the story was nice to Akane, so I'm nearly satisfied, tbh.

I really liked it, but then it took strange turns, like demanding sympathy for the abusers. I mean you can forgive an abuser, but it doesnt make it all fun cuddle times if they BEAT AND SEXUALLY ASSAULTED WOMEN. because a system demanded them to. Except the boys wouldn't be expelled or anything if they didn't play. But I mean maybe thats a commentary on how society and misogyny hurts both men and women and forces them into roles. But STILL there WERE guys who WERENT monsters, so when they ask for us to forgive the poor rapey beaty wooby boys, I'm just like NO. NO I WONT. SORRY. And the ending was confusing. And WHY did so many of the girls end up paired up with boys? MY BRAIN.

okay i THINK the theme was like how society can force you into bad roles and make you do things you wouldn't normally do if you had different circumstances, and the only way we can move forward is to try to understand eachother

For one, it definitely presented itself as a shoujo-ai/yuri series, and then did not deliver on that at all. And then with Kaharu being a villain, instead of it coming across as a commentary on a misogynistic society turns women misogynistic themselves, it just seemed more like 'lol girls always treat other girls worse than boys treat them!' There was no real explanation as to why Kaharu idealized this misogynistic world, consider she loved Sora -- wouldn't her ideal world been one based on misandry? Idgi.
I hated how the girls had to forgive the guys though. THAT was the worst part. Like, um, no. Just no.
Unfortunately, I submitted this secret when I'd only just started reading the manga, when my enthusiasm was really high. I thought it, like Utena, would serve as an interesting societal criticism, and would deconstruct some tropes, but apparently not. And we didn't even get any yuri as a consolation prize. :|

Anyway, someone already pointed Tsuki and Sora end married and I also want to point it wasn't a commentary on a misogynistic society turns women misogynistic themselves or "lol girls always treat other girls worse than boys treat them".
Tsuki was messed up, her motivations weren't clear enough (I blame the rushed ending) but all in all she only cared about herself and her "paradise" and for that she would hurt anyone, man or woman. Hell, she did even hurt Sora so that would turn Sora in her perfect "knight".

(Anonymous) 2012-01-03 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)It wasn't a narrative about misogyny, after all. It was about how people aren't willing to see past their own wants. Tsuki was obsessed with getting what she wanted, and she only cared about that. She ruined her caretaker's life for no reason other than he got in her way, despite how KIND he was. She scarred and traumatized Sora for daring to talk to a boy who might give her a less naive but still kind view of the world, because Sora "belonged" to her.
And yet, no one complains that Sora technically ends up forgiving and marrying the very person who's responsible for the scar on her face, and who manipulated her greatly through the course of the story. It's kind of hypocritical that people are complaining about the boys being forgiven, when Tsuki was not only forgiven, but Sora marries her. Tsuki never regrets any of it, unlike some of the boys did (some of them being just as broken as the girls).

There was another epilogue I have yet to say or you're just assuming the scenes of girls forgiving the boys = girls getting paired up with the boys? :/
