I kind of want to hear the other side of this story; I find it hard to believe you got that much hate just for "giving a bnf concrit"

(Anonymous) 2012-01-08 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
That's right, blame the victim...

(Anonymous) 2012-01-08 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously? You can spin most any thing to make ether side sound like a victim. What is wrong with being curious. Do we just not blame any one?

I'll admit some people are that touchy but (and I'm not a bnf or anything but) I've had to warn people off another person because of creepy shit they did to me or things they said about people behind there backs.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-09 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
i don't think you should be warning people off of anyone.

this is because i've been the victim in one of these situations, and the people who were victimizing me and others have "warned people off of me" because i stood up for myself. i have good cause to warn people off of the people involved, but i haven't done it. that would still tie me to them. it also drags people who aren't involved into old drama.

this is different if you're talking about someone sexually creepy, though.

Wanting to hear both sides of the story isn't blaming the victim when so little information was given in the secrete. We have no idea what the OP gave as concrit, so we have no way to decide if it actually was offensive or not (though, people remembering years after seems like a huge overreaction for almost anything the OP could possibly have said, I can't remember stuff like that after two months).

*secret not secrete....

I want to be in whatever fandoms you're in. Half of mine are like middle school: you diss the popular girl once, you're fucked forever.

[identity profile] hiyami.livejournal.com 2012-01-08 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
In mines, it's like high school in some ways except there are different playgrounds and each has their BNFs.
And if you diss one, most of times you do get some shit from her and her minions, but you also get support from the ones who are fed up with their mentality, so it evens up (and the latter are usually more interesting to stay in touch with, anyway).

If it gets really too bad, you just try to find another fandom place (LJ community, board, etc).

oh, good point.

it's possible that these fandoms people are mentioning where saying the wrong thing to just one person equals becoming a pariah 4lyfe are on the smaller size and don't have as many subsections.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-08 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh man, you're lucky. A lot of BNFs are raging power-drunk hurt-hurricanes. Don't doubt OP; you may think this is hard to believe, but holy shit, a lot of other people know what she's talking about.

[identity profile] violence4.livejournal.com 2012-01-08 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Sadly, I actually really don't find it hard to believe at all.

OP, it sucks this happened, but if you really want to remain in the fandom - frankly I personally would find that a little weird after knowing how nasty all those people could be - could you not just get a new account and start over?

[identity profile] inboots.livejournal.com 2012-01-08 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
samesies, tbh. but then again, all the fandoms i've been in (big shit like harry potter, starter point of the original lj bnfs cum published authors) are apparently exceptions to a nasty middle-school rule.

[identity profile] violence4.livejournal.com 2012-01-08 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I also think the really big fandoms like Harry Potter are big enough that they aren't dominated by just a few BNFs - so if you fell out with one you could just move to another part of the fandom. It's the slightly smaller ones where this kind of stufff is really a problem.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-09 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
Ummm, Harry Potter isn't immune to this shit, it's just that the fandom has been around long enough that people are starting to forget the worst examples. Most revolve around Cassie Clare, with Heidi her pet Internet lawyer being sicced on anyone who disagreed with Cassie or anyone from their inner circle.

One of the most infamous examples is when Cassie had her and her friends' laptops stolen and her fans jumped at the chance to donate money, some literally offering their last dollar. Heidi was threatening defamation suits against anyone who dared question the legitimacy of the theft or the ethics of giving money to somebody because you enjoy their fanfic. A woman who was struggling with the medical payments for her cancer treatment saw how effortlessly Cassie was raising money, and asked if Cassie would mind posting a link to this woman's own fundraising page. She was dragged over the coals for it, by Cassie's inner circle and her fans (Cassie had a very savvy knack of mongering this hatred in people but rarely leaving her own vitirol where it could be publically seen). Seriously, the woman's only crime was suffering from cancer, and she was harrassed and driven out of fandom.

There are other examples, although I don't remember them so well now. If you look up Cassie Clare or Heidi on the Fandom Wank Wiki, you'll find lots. There was one person who was a former member of their circle that they tried to run out of fandom, I think Ivy/Khirsah. Also, if you check the Ms Scribe saga, she basically turned an entire section of the fandom against each other by spreading rumours to both sides that the other was, ironically, spreading rumours. She bought down an entire website of Harry/Ginny shippers and turned them into the black sheep of fandom, just because she could.

lol i actually happened to be around for most of those, commented of the f_w posts before they got transferred to cornfield and everything. i've been doing the fandom shit for a while, but thanks for the walk down memory lane.

i have never heard a story like the one the op is telling in the secret happen there, tho. plenty of people left concrit (and worse) for the likes of claire or jaida (hell, one of the biggest OBHWF sites was openly critical and derisive of claire's work in their forums). plenty of people thought their work wasn't all that. concrit was never reason enough to turn anyone into a pariah, but then again, it was a ginormous fandom.

[identity profile] spiritlobo.livejournal.com 2012-01-08 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Dude, you would be amazed how much bullshit can be caused by "giving a bnf concrit"

AHH-MAZED.

[identity profile] gabzillaz.livejournal.com 2012-01-09 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
People will give you shit for doing less tbh.

[identity profile] duae.livejournal.com 2012-01-09 05:54 pm (UTC)(link)
There was someone below saying it was connected to http://www.journalfen.net/users/esclaramonde/109256.html saeva wank about 'my shota is better than your shota' or something. Dunno if it's true or not.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-11 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
My point, basically, was: Harry Potter is not British in the sense that people who are living in 2004 in the UK are British. It is not British in the sense that most people offering Brit-picking are British. It has roots in British history, obviously, and, in fact, in some ways embodies British history, but that does not make it British in the sense that Brit-pickers are British. Harry Potter is as all American as apple pie.

lolololol. She's like a hands-on guide on how to write arguments that are full of fail. And she also wrote 11 year old stutterer Blaise Zabina sucking Snape's cock. STELLAR human being.
