I think it's sad when BNFs can't handle concrit. If some one thinks they're soooo awesome and sic their minions on you, they're probably full of shit. And in my experience, being a BNF doesn't make you a great person, just a well-known person.

If you love the series...Don't let them run you off and don't explain yourself. The minions won't understand and the BNF probably feels awesome for "ruining" you.

You just do what you do and move on, even if they can't. Fandom is supposed to be fun, not middle school.

You have two options: get out of the fandom or say fuck the haters and keep doing whatever it is you do in fandom. Years ago, I corrected a translation mistake of a BNF's pet. Since the BNF was a BNF in three slightly related fandoms, all of which I was in, she rained shit down on me for years no matter where I went. But you know what? All the people she didn't turn against me turned out to be really great fandom friends and have stuck with me.

BNFs in general aren't the best at what they do: they're just good at making friends. Don't be surprised if the writers and artists on the fringe of fandom are way better than the BNFs.

The people telling you to "just" change usernames are kind of full of shit. It makes total sense to want to not have to hide because of a fucking grudge. It hurts to be targeted like that. A name change won't make OP feel better even if they ARE accepted all of the sudden. And it doesn't make you "cooler" than OP if YOU can get over that shit easily. Shut the fuck up.

OP, you shouldn't have to be dogpiled time and time again for what some fuckwits think is a mistake, and you shouldn't have to get a sock account either. Maybe you could find a part of the same fandom where those idiots don't hang out?

Well, first I would confront them. Tell them you weren't trying to attack anyone, it was just honest to god concrit (but it sounds to me like you already did that). If they can't accept that, the problem lies with them, not you, and there's no reason for you to feel like shit. They're nothing but bullies.
If I were you, I'd leave it as a last message for them, telling them how it is, before leaving the fandom, as it's quite obvious they're not willing to give you a chance.
After that, if you really want to be part of their fandom just create another identity/sock account, etc. Personally, I'd look elsewhere, since there exist great wank-free fandom communities - you just need to find them.

Don't bother with a sock or name change, really dedicated haters will find you out anyway, and you'll feel guilty for hiding (although you shouldn't, but feelings are feelings) and end up producing less fic (or art, or whatever). It's not worth abandoning your existing fanworks, especially if you're attached to them. Just keep producing what you love to produce, and do your best to ignore the crap flung your way. Plenty of people looking for quality fanworks to enjoy will be glad for your stuff, and many of those people don't even engage with the social aspect of fandom.

Also, try to remember that not everyone flinging crap is necessarily a horrible person. They're just naive for believing lies -- unfortunately on the Internet, it's very easy to "prove" lies but extremely hard to disprove anything. They're flinging crap at a fictional version of you, created by a butthurt egocentric loser, not at the real you. Eventually they'll get tired of it.

Alternately, you could drive to a city four or five hours away from home and spend a couple hours in a public library creating a sockpuppet who will insult the BNF even more, and from an IP far removed from your own. Maybe the new target will distract her. But you won't do that, because you have better things to do with your time.

idk man this is why i never give people concrit unless they ask for it. sometimes being nice and fake is just a lot easier

most people don't take nicely to criticism. maybe you're special or whatever but i'm pretty sure deep down it sucks to hear somebody correct you for something being overlooked. some people are polite enough to handle it maturely, and other people aren't. what sucks is you don't know who's bad and who's good until you actually poke them with that big bad stick.

so like, don't pick up the stick in the first place

but i guess that's really a moot point since you've already done it

That sucks OP. I am grateful for my lurking status on a lot of fandoms (really, I only just created this account because I finally found a fandom I want to be involved actively with), as this has prevented me from getting involved in drama like this. Especially since a lot of BNF writers I have wanted to crit forever. (My god, the sheer amount of badfic some of these BNF's do!)

For your current problem, I would suggest either muscling through it and blocking anyone who is awful after saying your piece, or just going to lurker status. All the fanfic-reading fun with none of the drama!

And for the future, use the sandwich method. Praise-crit-praise. That helps make it less harsh, and allows you to point and go 'No, see! I sad GOOD things too!'if drama stirs up.

This is part of the reason I don't leave constructive reviews on anything, no matter how desperately I think it's needed, unless the writer specifically says they want constructive reviews. I just sit back and resist the urge to red pen all over things, or ignore it if the story's good enough to look past it.


I recommend either changing your identity if you want to stay in the fandom, or finishing up any WIPs you might have and quietly bowing out of it. Chances are it isn't worth all the drama it's causing you anyways.

A while ago I left some concrit (just the standard 'try to expand your horizons and do more research/ check for mistakes' stuff) to a BNF who asked me for it, and she didn't reply at all. Instead, she twisted my words and said how down my concrit has made her on her blog, and even threatened to go on hiatus. I am very, very worried she might turn her fans on me.

Depending on what site this took / takes place on, you could try reporting them for harassment.
Or just not giving a fuck.
Or making an ED article about the BNF's whiny ass. If they and their followers' treatment towards crit is as bad as you say, they might warrant it.

Also, fandom shit won't follow you "forever."
This isn't like some felony you committed, that will be attached to you wherever you go.
I can't even understand why you would view this kind of thing on such an extreme level.
