I hate it when people throw the word "abuse' around like that without thinking about what it literally means
Someone being mean to you on the internet in a fandom where you can just leave the fandom and not have to deal with it anymore is NOT ABUSE

Wank away, F!S
Also I have actually been the victim of abuse before (which is why the wording of this secret bothers me), not that anyone will care because I'll get the same "well your experience isn't everyone else's" bullshit response

yeah, I could understand if OP actually knew these people irl, but...damn girl, all you have to do is turn off your monitor. it's definitely shitty that people are being dicks to OP but my goodness.

Well, to be fair abuse literally means

1: a corrupt practice or custom
2: improper or excessive use or treatment : misuse (i.e. drug abuse)
3 (obsolete): a deceitful act : deception
4: language that condemns or vilifies usually unjustly, intemperately, and angrily
5: physical maltreatment

It's terrible that you've been the victim of abuse, and I don't want to belittle that at all. But calling for the limitation of language when it's been correctly used is sort of hyperbolic.

Online bullying/harassment is a huge issue...

When it's people you know in real life, sure
Otherwise, how hard is it to turn the computer off or change usernames or something? It's not that hard to remove yourself from other people online, this isn't the same thing as teens being cyberbullied

How does knowing the person have anything to do with the definition of cyberbullying? You don't even have to know people in real life to be bullied by them. They just have to be present.

Also, you're ignoring the psychological effects of creating a image of yourself on the internet. You've in effect placed yourself visibly in front of other people, even if no one can see you. It's like placing a photoshopped picture of yourself in a hallway. You could ignore what people write on that picture, whether it be praise or a mustache, but most people won't and will feel compelled not to.

You can turn off the computer once it gets to be too bad, but you'll never be able to unknow what happened or to unread the cruel things that were said about you.

Your understanding of cyber-bullying seems a little limited. Not knowing the people involved in real life doesn't necessarily reduce the stress and emotional turmoil to acceptable levels. Especially considering that they the person in question may not be able to participate in activities (online or not) that they once enjoyed due to harassment.

[identity profile] miss-sevens.livejournal.com 2012-01-09 03:29 pm (UTC)(link)
This.

A few years ago, people I only knew from the internet started harassing me and making death threats. The last straw was when someone put up my full name, address, and phone number on a public forum to have random people harass me (no one did thank goodness).

These were people I didn't know in REAL LIFE, none of it translated into REAL LIFE, but it caused many nights of sleeplessness.

If that wasn't consider cyber-bullying, then I give up.

how did they find out your personal information? did someone hack into your computer or something? scary

[identity profile] miss-sevens.livejournal.com 2012-01-09 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
To be honest, I don't know and that's the scary part.
