i miss going to the library ):

[identity profile] kryptoncat.livejournal.com 2012-01-11 06:53 am (UTC)(link)
They were magical places. I used to just find a cozy corner in one and then never leave.

[identity profile] unicornherds.livejournal.com 2012-01-11 06:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Why don't you go to the library anymore?

[identity profile] santagrover.livejournal.com 2012-01-11 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
too far away, too many fines

>_>

(Anonymous) 2012-01-11 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
If they're your favourite author then why aren't you just buying the books? I assume if they're your fave you'd want to read them again...

(Anonymous) 2012-01-11 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
(This is the OP) I never buy books that I haven't read. No matter how much I like an author, I'm always going to get their latest book from the library before I even consider buying it. That way I don't end up wasting money on something I'm never going to re-read.

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2012-01-11 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
This! I have a series of sorts that I really enjoy books 1 and 2 of, so I bought the third and fourth book recently, and they were horrid. I should have just gotten them from the library...

On the flip side, if I've checked out a book from the library repeatedly, I'll just up and buy it, it makes more sense. ♥

(Anonymous) 2012-01-11 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
So.. you have read every book you own? (Aside from gifts, I suppose). I find that impressive because I own TONS of books and have probably only read 10% of them.

I always get books from the library when it comes to new authors or genres I'm not exactly in love with but want to sample, that sort of thing. But when it comes to my favourite authors, I will go out and buy their new book without having borrowed it first. The reason they're my fav author is because I like their work so much, and I trust them to entertain me.

[identity profile] havemy-heart.livejournal.com 2012-01-11 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
Because everyone is made of money? Some of us can't afford to buy the books. js

[identity profile] xerxes92.livejournal.com 2012-01-11 06:49 am (UTC)(link)
and the most privilege-showing comment in the thread goes too...

(Anonymous) 2012-01-11 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
Nope, sorry, can't agree with you. I'd much rather have my favorite authors be popular than obscure. That may mean waiting to check a book out from the library, sure, but at least I can rest easy knowing she sells well enough that the publisher will probably buy her next book.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-11 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
This. It's getting pretty hard for even established midlist authors to get published. If I love an author, I'm praying for a sleeper hit.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-11 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
This. If they're that obscure, chances are they're not making the sales needed to keep getting published. I'd always rather my fav authors be popular and continue getting published than them being my special little secret and not getting any new canon from them. Plus, popularity means lots of people to discuss their works with.

[identity profile] followthemoth.livejournal.com 2012-01-11 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
It probably just makes you a hipster. :p

(Anonymous) 2012-01-11 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
I don't feel this way about books, but I admit that I sometimes have this attitude towards my favourite bands/artists, because it is cheaper to go to their shows if they are obscure, lol. I doubt the artists appreciate this perspective though.. which I guess is why it's a secret.

[identity profile] lemon-m.livejournal.com 2012-01-11 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
That's actually really awful. And it kinda makes you a hipster :V

(Anonymous) 2012-01-11 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
I know it's awful, that's why it's a secret.

I think I must misunderstand the definition of hipster, don't they like obscure things because they're obscure and want them to stay obscure because they hate all things popular and mainstream? Or is there another definition I'm not aware of? (I'm not being snarky or antything, I genuinely want to know.)

I think not buying their books and supporting their work probably takes care of making you a bad fan...

(Anonymous) 2012-01-11 08:32 am (UTC)(link)
Elitist much?

[identity profile] hunter-san.livejournal.com 2012-01-11 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
But it can be a double edged sword. Obscure authors are less likely to have books published en mass and may not have a copy at the library at all,. Making it hard for people to purchase the books and support the author.

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2012-01-11 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
Ha, I know the feeling. I've waited MONTHS for books at the library and it drives me nuts. That's what I get for being late to every party.

[identity profile] havemy-heart.livejournal.com 2012-01-11 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
I want them to be popular so the library already has or can order a copy. I used to buy a lot more books, but I can't do that now so I have to rely on the library and hope they have the books I want to read.

If the author is obscure, the library might not even order their books for you if you're the only one who knows who they are.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-11 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
I don't care about popularity in the "bandwagon" sense, but I want my favorite authors to actually be able to make a living writing, which is only getting harder and harder, and I think my favorites deserve it.
