Man, I related to this scene so hard. I can't watch really watch it now, but I understood it so much. My father only destroyed my things once - I was not abused* and I know I did not deserve the extent of that particular punishment but I still remember standing there screaming and crying as he tore pages out of my books. If I had had the means and the ability to I would have run the fuck away too, despite the fact that I loved my family because that was my shit that you destroyed, jackass!

I...sort of agree with this comment. While I won't watch The Little Mermaid again because I honestly think it's a rather annoying film, now that I'm older, I don't like that scene at all.

My father actually went off one day. He was laid off the day after President Obama took office (my father is black) and he took it hard. And, not gonna lie, I was a mouthy girl at the age of 16. I will never excuse the day he actually picked up a plastic hanger and started whipping me until he apologizes. I ran away to my mother's work. After that, we never spoke of it and he has never put a hand on my like that again. It only happened once.

So get why Ariel would run away. But that doesn't make my father a horrible person. Sorry, I don't believe that bullshit. He has supported me in everything I've wanted to pursue and has been an encouraging person to everyone in his life.
