inb4 Jesidres exaggerates what happened at AnimeBoston again

reality: 15 or so cosplayers heiling outside Prudential, the Norway facepalming in horror
her version: 40 cosplayers heiling in front of the Holocaust memorial and all laughing AND IT MADE THE NEWSPAPERS

(Anonymous) 2012-01-14 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
That it had to be exaggerated at all in order to get people angry enough to condemn it says way more about Hetalia fans than it does about Jesidres. It was still a disgusting act that the fandom tries to downplay in order to preserve its image to this very day. And they wonder why even some of us who still like the series can't fucking stand them.

It wasn't exaggerated, tbh. Fandom was disgusted by how it really happened.

Yup, this. We heard about it the way it really happened and raged our asses off and got an honest apology (NOT just to the fandom, BTW) from the people who were disrespectful enough to do it. It doesn't change the fact that it happened, and personally, I think we could/should have been harsher with them (unfortunately, it's kind of impossibly hard to kick someone out of a largely internet-based fandom, thanks to internet anonymity), but at the same time, it's pointless to keep ragging on the fandom's reaction to that particular incident if it's already been resolved.

[identity profile] lovelycudy.livejournal.com 2012-01-14 01:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Personally, I don't think the apology was that honest and it was too convoluted for my taste but YMMV. And there's no point in beating an already zombified horse.

Yeah, there's that one Hetalia-hater anon here that thinks if Hetalia fans weren't bigots, we'd be able to magically ban and kick out every offensive fandom member, and to bar them from attending any cons ever. It's not that simple.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-14 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
DA.

I don't really give two fucks about Hetalia, but I do know that it's possible to police your attendance list at cons. Or else no-one would ever be black-balled from attending conventions of all kinds. There are other fandoms that manage to do it. People are routinely banned from regional cons. Steampunk cons have lists of people who aren't allowed to register. Internet comms are one thing, but conventions are another. If you're committed to keeping people who do Nazi cosplay out, as a fandom and as con organizers, then you find ways to do it. You keep lists of people who are problems, who show up in Nazi gear, and you circulate them through the con circuit. It's not impossible. You just have to commit to the effort it requires.

[identity profile] miezen.livejournal.com 2012-01-15 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
This is the con organizers' job, though, not the fandom's. And really, most cons don't have rules against cosplaying Nazi characters. Otherwise how would Hellsing cosplay ever happen? Usually, with any major con, you have to do something illegal and harmful to get blacklisted. Regardless, it's ultimately con security's job. What's Hetalia fandom supposed to do? Get someone into every single con's staffing as a higher up that can decide to ban Nazi cosplay?

(Anonymous) 2012-01-16 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
Same different anon.

Like I said, I don't know anything about Hetalia fandom and I don't give a shit. But I think it would be as easy as getting some concerted effort in the fandom, especially those attending the con, to email the organisers and say, "I don't think Nazi cosplay is appropriate, and visible swastikas/death's heads/Nazi paraphernalia ought to be banned so as to prevent problems both inside the con and with the local population. I would like to suggest that the rules for the convention reflect this and ban visible Nazi symbols from being worn or displayed at the convention." Enough people do it, and you get rules, and ways to exclude the people cosplaying Nazis as opposed to Germany or whatever. It seems pretty bloody simple to me. But the big anime con in my hometown (Baltimore) has been greeted with some trepidation by non-Hetalia nerds because of the amount of Jews in town and the proportion of Holocaust survivors and their families that live here. When the con is downtown and cosplayers are all over the Inner Harbor, it makes people nervous.

But whatever, I'm not in anime. I just think that it's very easy to say "we can't do anything!" and leave the status quo as is when taking steps to push Nazi cosplayers out are pretty damn straight forward, though they will ruffle feathers. It depends on how much you, meaning the fandom in general, value keeping Nazi cosplayers out.

The fandom never tried to downplay it. When the news hit, there was a huge outcry regarding how awful it was. No one was happy about it. No one defended it. Yes, we did have the maincomm post about it comm-locked, but not to downplay what happened. Just to avoid it being obvious fodder for people who hate the fandom to latch onto and sling at us forever. Which of course still happened anyway since the news blew up all across the internet, not just on LJ.
