While no one can deny that the Soviet Union committed atrocious crimes (I'm not sure if they are considered genocide or not, just I'm not sure any of the horrid things the British Empire did is considered genocide or -pardon this not-American if the United States has even been accused of such) the hammer and sickle represent communism which is not a murderous, evil ideology per se. Many parties and associations use that symbol and none of them want to revive the horrors of Stalinism. The swastika is another story.

Finally, the Dresden Bombings are hardly in the same level than the Third Reich crimes. Because England did not start the war and did not organise the murder of millions of her own people. Nor did the United States (I won't get into the nuclear bombs issue because I know more of European history than of American and what we learnt about the nuclear weapons in uni is not enough for me to speak.

^I agree on the Dresden bomb issue: it has been inflated by Nazi propaganda and the myth is still perpuated today. I hate that people point out this as a war crime and ignore the atomic bombs.

[identity profile] lovelycudy.livejournal.com 2012-01-14 02:00 pm (UTC)(link)
In my country, people don't have any idea about Dresden. And those who do understand it as a justified part of the war. But my country has never particularly fond of the USA.

[identity profile] haro.livejournal.com 2012-01-14 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol well I'm American, and uhh--- I don't remember EVER learning about the Dresden Bombings in school, but we certainly focused on the A-bombs and what they caused.

[identity profile] lovelycudy.livejournal.com 2012-01-14 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. In high-school we learn the basics and in uni the focus is on analysing Fascism/Nazism and the debates around it. The bombs came into the picture when talking about the US new role in world politics, though.

[identity profile] haro.livejournal.com 2012-01-14 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I just find it odd that anon is saying the A-bombs get 'ignored' while the Dresden bombings are vilified. I don't know what country the anon is from though.

Although I don't know why the a-bombs would be part of a discussion on new politics considering they occurred almost seventy years ago, but if your country isn't fond of the US, I suppose that could be part of a bias in teaching.

[identity profile] lovelycudy.livejournal.com 2012-01-14 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Totally. The A-bombs is probably the best known argument when it comes to morally dubious things done by the Allies.

By "new" I meant "after WWII". My clock is kind of late, lol.

[identity profile] haro.livejournal.com 2012-01-14 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
No, inorite? I didn't even know about the Dresden bombings until I started doing WWII research on my own.

Ah okay. :)

[identity profile] lovelycudy.livejournal.com 2012-01-14 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly, it's one of those things you only know if you actively read about the period.
