On the one had, this horse died a loooooooong time ago and we really don't need to revive it again.

On the other... I agree. I tried to like Kotone/Lyra, I really did, but I just like everything about Kris's design so much more.

I actually didn't buy that pokemon game because I was ticked that they replaced Crys. Which is probably stupid of me, but damn. Why replace the kick-ass girl with a cutesy bow-wearing one?

(Of course, mind that at the time I found this out I was being harassed on WoW for being a girl, and had a couple of manga I was reading throw blatant misogyny in my face, so I am perhaps a bit more bitter about this than a normal person.)

Wow, you were even more upset than me. Of course, you did have a better reason, since you were upset about the sexism while I was more like, "Nooo Crys was my favorite I want to be her not this random new kid!!;.;" ...But yeah, I eventually bought Soul Silver since I didn't want to be the only one in my class without a PokeWalker. >.>;; Still couldn't bring myself to play as a girl, though.

Sorry to hear about the misogyny. :/ IA; it does kinda suck how every single Pokemon girl has to be all cutesy while the guys just wear the normal clothes you'd expect someone to wear while traveling around on foot. At least the girl from BW was better...?

It still bugs me that sure was completely redesigned. I don't need Kris' to be able to enjoy the game, there's not much to like about a silent protagonist here,imo, but all the remake's characters at least look like their original counterparts. I was just hoping her design would follow the same pattern (updated sporty clothes, expression, pose, etc.).

She won my heart.

Plus...I never played Crystal. Crystal came out after I hit my "pokemon is dumb" phase. So I don't have the nostalgia for Crys. *shrug*

As a fan of both girls I never understood where all the hate came from. Unless you're a fan of the comics or something, neither of the girls has any real personality in the game except the tidbits of dialogue you get from Lyra if you play as the boy in HG/SS. They're avatars for the female players. Sure their designs are different but I think all the hate for Lyra is seriously unwarranted. I can understand being pissed off Kris is gone but goddamn.

Seriously this. A lot of what I've heard is tomboy>girly girl which is utter bullshit.

I agree that Kotone/Lyra hat is stupid looking but it isn't enough to make me dislike her.

I prefer Lyra for the games and Chris for the manga.

We can be dumb and over-invested together, OP. Kris was the first girl protagonist I'd ever played, so I have some of my feelings projected all over her as the reason I wish she hadn't been replaced. I feel kind of petty for being sad none of those rom hacks that replaced Kotone with Kris was ever finished.

I think both their designs are ugly as butts so I'm unhappy either way. Though as a kid I always imagined it was me in the game and not whatever sprite it was supposed to be, so I don't care at all whether it's a tomboy or a girly-girl representing "me" in the game.

It would suck if these guys had personalities and tomboyish-personalty Crys was replaced with ultra girly Lyra, but they don't so it's easy to insert your preferred personalities on them. Plus pokemon has a good mix of tomboyish and girly female playable characters anyway.

She was iconic in that she was the first female character. I love her design. It was dumb to even consider replacing her. I almost backed out of buying HG/SS because of it.

I always liked Crystal better too. I don't know if there's a difference in personality in the anime or the manga- I'm not up to date with those two.

So speaking just from a design point of view? Crystal seems like a very cool, sporty girl, while the other (Kotone?) seems more like a 'girly girl'. The cool, sporty girl wins by a long shot.

Hell, even for the 90s, I side-eyed the fuck out of Kris's outfit as a kid because it just didn't click with me and say, "Hey, this is a Pokemon protagonist!" Lyra's outfit, on the other hand, was cute and refreshing. :3

I liked both. Also, a bit OT, but I lost my Crystal version about... 8 years ago. I was SO SO sad. I had a shiny Butterfree (not-cheated, it just appeared before me during that bug-pokemon tournament), I had almost all Pokemon save for 3 (which I knew where to find in my silver version, I just had to catch them and trade them over)... and then I lost it.

And now, 8 years later... my grandmother found it in a drawer in her kitchen. And it's still my game that's there, the clock hasn't run out yet. I could cry tears of joy, I have it back I have it back I have it back.

Okay, back on topic, Crystal is my favourite game, so naturally, I had extremely high expectations when it came to Soulsilver. And they were met. It's not a flawless game, but I was happy enough. I especially liked that your first pokemon is following you. I thought it was a cute idea.

Well if it helps, the manga Pokemon Adventures has Lyra and Crys as the same person. She just got a new outfit.
