(Of course, mind that at the time I found this out I was being harassed on WoW for being a girl, and had a couple of manga I was reading throw blatant misogyny in my face, so I am perhaps a bit more bitter about this than a normal person.)

Of course, you did have a better reason, since you were upset about the sexism while I was more like, "Nooo Crys was my favorite I want to be her not this random new kid!!;.;" ...But yeah, I eventually bought Soul Silver since I didn't want to be the only one in my class without a PokeWalker. >.>;; Still couldn't bring myself to play as a girl, though.
Sorry to hear about the misogyny. :/ IA; it does kinda suck how every single Pokemon girl has to be all cutesy while the guys just wear the normal clothes you'd expect someone to wear while traveling around on foot. At least the girl from BW was better...?

Basically, horrible month being punched with sexism in the face, and then I heard Soulsilver was out! YES, I thought. Pokemon Silver was my very first video game as a kid on my GB Color. My very first Pokemon. I still remember my lovely Epseon, and the rush I got when I defeated the Elite Four. I was PSYCHED realizing I could play as a kick-butt girl tromping around my favorite pokemon world, all updated!
Aaaaand then... yeah. I saw the new design. I will probably buy it eventually and just play the boy, but it really was a emotional punch to the gut during that time. If it was earlier or muuuuch much later I probably wouldn't have cared so much. *shrugs*

If EVERY female protagonist in Pokemon was unbearably feminine then maybe I could understand being tired of it, but the heroines in RSE and BW aren't girly. Even the girl from FRLG isn't all that cutesy. So we have an almost even mix of girly girls and tomboys.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-16 05:02 am (UTC)(link)The RSE girl hardly counts since she's almost as old as Crys. And even in Emerald she DOES look pretty girly, since she trades in her workout clothes for a dress.
Also, when the girls are dressed in girly ways despite the fact that it would be HIGHLY IMPRACTICAl for what they're doing in the games (Dawn, I'm talking to you) I think it is sexist.
Plus ayrt wasn't upset about the fact that the character was girly. She was upset that they REPLACED a non-girly character with a girly one. That's a bit different than just having a character who's girly.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-16 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)And I wouldn't call her "pretty girly" in Emerald because I hardly consider that to be a dress. It barely covers her crotch. It's more like a really long shirt that she wears with shorts underneath. She's also wearing very practical shoes and gloves, and there's nothing about her "dress" that indicates it will get in the way of her adventuring.
Also, even if Lyra is girly, her outfit isn't impractical. It looks pretty damn comfortable to me. The only characters that you can say are sacrificing sense for the sake of femininity are Dawn and Leaf, and that's two out of six girls.
If it was just that, then that's one thing (even if I do think it's silly to be upset over something so minor) but she claimed that it was SEXIST for her to be replaced by a girly character, which is so not true.

Hun, sit down and take a chill pill. One, I mentioned that I probably would not have cared nearly as much if it wasn't in conjunction with a lot of other stuff that was going on. Two, the anon who replied to you was right in saying it's different to make a girly character rather than replace a tough one with a girly one. Three?
Three is that I do like a lot of 'girly' protagonists/characters, when done well. Like Lily (How I Met Your Mother), Lola (from a book), Mara (also from a book), Glenda (from the Wicked Musical)... girlishness I find is just fine when it's a fleshed out character. Partly I feel this way because my sister is very girly, but still kicks ass and is one of the toughest and proudest people I know. Girlishness is not a problem in and of itself.
What is a problem is that in a lot of Anime, I had noticed that women who were tough were many times either replaced by or made into a girly character. Or were shown to be 'lesser' through narrative or other means than the girly character. During that time I read one Manga that flat out stated that women, no matter how tough or well-trained they were, would freeze in a crisis while a man, no matter how timid or 'weak' they were, would rise to take over the situation.
It was in the form of a inspiring monologue and everything.
This I read right before I saw the character changed, so you bet I felt annoyed as all hell. It isn't that a character is girly, but that in many cultures and in many peoples' eyes a girly girl is superior to a tomboy or any other type of woman. THIS is my issue, because no one is superior. We all rock equally. And I'm sick of people making judgement calls about how people choose to live their life.
Hell, I'm not even a tomboy or particularly tough looking myself. I like lipstick and sleek curve-hugging dresses with pimped-out high-heels. Sure, I also like to throw on cargoes and hoodies, but I would no more classify myself a tomboy as I would a diva. *shrugs*
TL'DR- You barkin' up the wrong tree.
