I've been reading the books lately, and I find I like RDJ's version. He's not a pure, complete asshole the way Cumberbatch is. Canon!Sherlock is condescending and a little self-absorbed, but he doesn't feel like an utter asshole. He's not perfect, but I vastly prefer him.

I don't have qualms with either Watson's personality, though. I just find it a little funny that someone who's "tanned and thin" from Afghanistan would be a little, erm, Martin Freeman-esque. I love Martin Freeman, but I would never use "thin" to describe him.

You have point about RDJs Sherlock. The thing that annoyed me a little about him is how completely over the top he is in terms of eccentricities and mannerisms.

I don't think recent Watsons have been done badly, but for some reason I always find like there's something missing in them.

To get all superficial here, one thing that endeared me to Sherlock BBC was they were actually relatively young. Sherlocks tend to be made so old in all adaptations. RDJ really isn't as bad as some when it comes to how old people cast Sherlock, but I do prefer the BBC for that.

I'm a little confused, he looks thin to me...

IDK if I'd call him 'thin'. He's pretty average in build. Certainly not fat, but not someone I'd describe as 'thin' either.

Spoilers for The Great Game, just in case.

He wears a lot of jumpers and cardigans that make him look rather like a cream puff, but he's really quite thin. Try The Great Game, at the pool, after Sherlock's ripped that coat off of him and he sort of stumbles against the cabin — you can see it quite clearly then.
