I more meant that there's much less connection to anything actually canon in the movie, especially in terms of characterization. In very broad, fuzzy terms it's relatable: eccentric genius with a loyal companion. But other than that pretty much every thing else is different/forgoed. The intricate plots, the most of the characterization. Sherlock BBC, I feel, tries a little harder to actually mirror the canon.
I'm not saying either is better, they're just very different.

Me, I've been a Sherlockian for decades, and I love them both. And Granada. And the Russian series. And the Ronald Howard series. And for that matter the Geoffrey Whitehead... er, um, yup, as long as there's a decent Watson, I'm pretty much a fan!

(Anonymous) 2012-01-15 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)The Granada series (for all its occasional cheesiness) knocks all other versions into a cocked hat, IMO.
The one, the only Sherlock Holmes worth a damn. Second place to Russian Holmes.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-16 05:20 pm (UTC)(link)It's not quite flawless to me because of the mix and match approach to the stories and the fact that Eastern Europe doesn't look anything like London (though they try hard) - plus they have some truly strange minor casting choices. But Solomin Watson: he pretty.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-16 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)It simply IS more faithful: it was designed to be so.
What pisses many Granada fans off more is the way Ritchie (and many movies fans who haven't even seen Granada) engage in knocking copy, trying to say it's "stodgy". Brett? Stodgy? Hahahahaha.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-15 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)I don't have qualms with either Watson's personality, though. I just find it a little funny that someone who's "tanned and thin" from Afghanistan would be a little, erm, Martin Freeman-esque. I love Martin Freeman, but I would never use "thin" to describe him.

I don't think recent Watsons have been done badly, but for some reason I always find like there's something missing in them.
To get all superficial here, one thing that endeared me to Sherlock BBC was they were actually relatively young. Sherlocks tend to be made so old in all adaptations. RDJ really isn't as bad as some when it comes to how old people cast Sherlock, but I do prefer the BBC for that.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-16 09:52 am (UTC)(link)He wears a lot of jumpers and cardigans that make him look rather like a cream puff, but he's really quite thin. Try The Great Game, at the pool, after Sherlock's ripped that coat off of him and he sort of stumbles against the cabin — you can see it quite clearly then.
