......uh. the BRITANNIANS are WHITE.

How is that HARD TO UNDERSTAND? It was a VERY not so subtle way for Japan to make a jab at the western world and it's (granted semi old) notion to make EMPIRES EVERYWHERE.

Now, people saying Kallen and Suzaku are white? Yeah, they need to get their heads checked. They were 11s. Japanese.

But otherwise? :| No.

It was a VERY not so subtle way for Japan to make a jab at the western world and it's (granted semi old) notion to make EMPIRES EVERYWHERE.

If that's the case, I'm laughing my ass off, because Japan is the last country that should be criticizing anyone else for imperialism.

[identity profile] otakugal15.livejournal.com 2012-01-17 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
Oh I know. But, the running gag with eating PIZZA all the time? That one was at LEAST a jab at the states. Cause, you know, WE ALL EAT PIZZA DAILY. :P

(i can't remember other instances as it's been a few years since i saw the show, but i remember that one well.)

[identity profile] mskye.livejournal.com 2012-01-17 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
I thought that it was just product placement for Pizza Hut. Was it confirmed to be a jab at the States? Honestly, I like that idea better because then at least the scenes had more purpose than to make me hungry for pizza. I want some pizza just thinking about it.

[identity profile] kindlycoyote.livejournal.com 2012-01-17 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Well, that is a improvement over us apparently eating hamburgers all the time at least...

[identity profile] dorknessrising.livejournal.com 2012-01-17 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
That stereotype becomes even more hilarious when you remember that Burger King Japan is responsible for the Windows 7 Whopper (http://gizmodo.com/5388380/japans-windows-7-whopper-is-real-and-its-horrifying).

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2012-01-17 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
because Japan is the last country that should be criticizing anyone else for imperialism

And yet, they do this, all the time. The Japanese students I teach are so woefully ignorant of their own history it makes me want to jab my eyes out with a spork. Their history education of that era consists of "some people in Japan wanted peace and prosperity for all Asia and to fight off the evil Euro-American Empires! AND THEN THEY DROPPED THE BOMB ON HIROSHIMA."

I shit you not I once sat through a lecture wherein a Japanese art scholar was saying that the difference between Japan and the Western empires was that Japan had a "samurai spirit" that made their people refuse to engage in slavery.

The sad part is none of that surprises me, since I live it every day.

I want to write about my grandfather's experiences as a Korean POW at the hands of Unit 731. I don't care if I get any money out of it, I just want his story to be told so that this country can stop denying he and everybody else they tortured ever existed. But I know nobody would publish it, and I'm afraid of the backlash I'd get for even trying.

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2012-01-17 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
But-but the comfort women were paid and and they wanted to go! I read it in a Japanese textbook!

[identity profile] aislingthegreat.livejournal.com 2012-01-17 04:06 pm (UTC)(link)
:( Dunno if it means anything, but I'd read it. Maybe look into self-publishing?

[identity profile] hiyami.livejournal.com 2012-01-17 06:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Write it in English and try to publish it in UK or USA.
Once it's out, it means people from Japan or other countries might at least get a testimony of what it was like.

It may only matter to researchers in a first time, but be certain that there WILL be people interested. And even if the truth takes decades to emerge in Japan itself, well, books can last. People, sadly, don't.
So it's important to do it if your grandfather can still tell the story to you, or while you remember the most of what he told you.

There's actually a name for that shit. It's called 'Nihonjinron', and it's pernicious and pretty much permeates Japanese society.

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2012-01-17 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
I thought nihonjinron was about crazy assed shit like "only Japanese people see all seven colours in the rainbow" and "only Japan has four seasons" and whatnot, not political ultraconservatism.

I hesitate to judge people for this, though-- it's their education system. I'm American and I had never heard of interment camps in America in WWII until I was in college. And our version of WWII in high school? "The rest of the world was being all crazy and stuff and nazis and so we dropped a nuke on Japan and won the war."

And when I responded to my history teacher with something along the lines of "uh, if the Germans were the Nazis, why did we bomb Japan?" and she sneered at me and ignored the question.

I honestly wonder if she even knew.

damn, really? we had to learn a shit ton about WWII where I was going to school (in Texas). I think we even watched videos about the internment camps

[identity profile] valenciapilgrim.livejournal.com 2012-01-17 05:33 am (UTC)(link)
I don't remember when I learned about interment camps...but I agree with the sentiment of what you are saying here. And I don't EVER remember any teacher in high school bringing up the question of if we really *needed* to nuke Japan and (for good measure) firebomb the shit out of them too. It could have happened, grant you, I just don't remember. In high school I had one history teacher who was so far beyond amazing I can't even begin to explain (I will say that I aced a ton of college classes without ever cracking a book just by remembering what he taught us)...and one who had his head so far up his ass that no one literally ever had any idea what he was talking about, and I think he was eventually fired for perving on the girls volleyball team. So yeah, it's possible that the first guy brought it up and I just don't remember.

For the record, I do remember an assembly when I was in elementary school where a WWII veteran who talked about how he didn't know if it was right for us to bomb Japan or not, and that made a huge impression on me, even when I was so young and didn't really know shit about WWII. But it's very telling that this information came from a veteran and not from a textbook.

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2012-01-17 06:33 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I don't judge them for it, hence my eye, not their eye ;p

A lot of Canadian students don't learn anything about their own history except the fur trade and the building of the building of the CPR. I'm consistently shocked when Americans remember the names of people in government who enacted shit, or the names of more than two or three presidents who lived before they were born.

Did the samurai spirit also lead them to force thousands of barely-trained Filipino and American soldiers to march until they died, by any chance.

[identity profile] smittenlotus.livejournal.com 2012-01-17 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
I second this; I was really confused by this secret. I'm not a huge CG fans but yeah, weren't the Britannians supposed to be Caucasian? The only real Japanese person I remember was Suzaku.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-17 08:00 am (UTC)(link)
Uh, Kallen was a 'real' Japanese too, considering she IDs as Japanese even though she was biracial.

[identity profile] smittenlotus.livejournal.com 2012-01-17 08:11 am (UTC)(link)
As I stated I'm not a huge fan of this show, so I don't remember everything about it. Allow me to rephrase: the only one I remembered being Japanese was Suzaku because so much attention was given to that fact (at least in the episodes I remember watching).
