I was born at the end of the 80s. I wish I could have seen him be a legend, but he's nothing but a creep to me.

I was born in the beginning of the 90s, and I see him as a legend. I've always seen him as a legend.

Yeah, me too. Well, I was born in '91, but still. Now that I'm older I recognize his musical talent, but the way that I grew up with him was as "that creepy walking freak show" rather than as a talented musician.

Did you live under a rock? I was born at the same time and he was easily the most popular artist when I was young.

You are what you are. And frankly, I've been a little annoyed at how much the pedophile scandal is being swept under the carpet while he gets posthumously lauded as a genius.

That's probably because whether there was any truth to said scandal is kind of up in the air. The kid who was at the center of it had a father who admitted on tape that he was suing MJ for his money, iirc.

In 20/30 years time, all people will remember is the music and research will be needed to find that he was ever accused of pedophilia (he was considered innocent in court, btw).

No he was considered not guilty. That is not the same as innocent.

i was around back then, and even in the 'bad' era he was known as a weirdo. if memory serves correct, the rumors and innuendo started when 'thriller' got huge.

wasn't it mostly assumed he was gay though? i remember a lot of rumors surrounding his effeminacy and soft-spoken nature...but then, those were also considerd 'sexy' by a large portion of his fanbase too.

I love his music and will always remember him as a legend.

I don't think he was a pedophile, mainly because I was sexually abused as a child by multiple people, and I think I know a pedophile when I see one. I'm not saying he can't be a pedophile, but... I just can't see it. No offense to anyone who thinks he should have gotten a guilty verdict.
I do believe, however, that he was insane in the head and he didn't know how to act around children like a grown man should. I think he had the mentality of a child.

I am more then willing to bet he did something inappropriate with those kids... but in the sense of a giggly child doing some silly shit except he's not a child which makes a rueful head shaking moment disturbing instead. I'll be the jesus juice stuff actually happened, for example. But I doubt he ever molested those kids.

I'm less up in the air about if he was gay or not, but frankly I don't think he was capable of a normal relationship at that time with any gender, rendering the question semi-moot.

I think growing up the way he did wasn't conducive to becoming a particularly well-adjusted adult.

Ugh, I hate this attitude. Why would you wish an earlier death on someone just so they could be remembered better? That's sick.

This. He's a human being, first and foremost. To wish he'd died earlier so that you could remember him differently is incredibly selfish and fucked-up.

To me, he is a legend. Not a creep. And irl I chew people out when they say that.

I'm sure he wasn't a pedophile, more like a person suffering from a mental illness who thought and acted like a child. In his head he was still 10; that's why the sleepovers and hanging out with kids were no big deal to him. It's sad people used it to destroy him instead of trying to get him some help.

I wish he'd gotten some help, for that and his body image issues. It seems like the poor guy had a pretty miserable life.

He really did keep trying to have a normal childhood.

He'll always be a genius to me. I never believe he was a child molester.

He is one of those artists who people say 'He was a legend, he was brilliant, he was a genius' and all I can say is '...really?'

Even without the trial and everything, I never though his music was anything special. I only like Thriller and even that one I only pull out around Halloween to listen to.

But I just don't how one artist or band goes down in history forever while others fade into obscurity. The Beatles are another band I just 'don't get'.
