i actually really like the getup in this picture.

Guess you should come be a construction worker in Japan, then :D

I can relate. I ordered a yukata from Japan this summer just because it was my favorite color and had my favorite animal on it, and therefore obviously meant to belong to me - and that thing's comfortable. I made a Kenshin cosplay also, and the kimono/hakama/sandals combo is about the most comfortable costume I've ever worn. I'd wear that stuff every day if I could. (I could do without geta, though.)

(Anonymous) 2012-01-20 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
tbh that outfit doesn't even look super japanese????

[identity profile] jchrys.livejournal.com 2012-01-20 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
...which I now WANT.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-20 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Have you ever been to Japan? This type of outfit is fairly common for manual-labor types.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-20 08:46 am (UTC)(link)
tbqh it does. it's a do up of a construction worker outfit, but it is unmistakably a construction worker/manual laborer outfit.
ext_81845: amuro ray from mobile suit gundam, in his underwear, from the doan's island episode (WTF?!)

Because other cultures don't have comfortable clothes?

I mean, wear what you want and fuck the haters but don't try to act like it isn't a conscious fashion choice on your part.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-20 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
The OP did write "I can wear things from pretty much any other culture and people seem to be okay with it...", so it sounds like there's some cultural variety in their wardrobe and it's only the Japanese-style stuff that draws comment. But I'm also enjoying imagining that OP has a giant fuck-off closet wall-to-wall with, like, kaftans and ponchos and kilts and cowboy hats and berets and sarongs and an unanticipated amount of breechcloths in regular rotation, but it's only the tobi that get comments.

It's the difference between liking something and liking something because it's Japanese, IMO. And if you legit like it, you have nothing to be ashamed about. I worry about seeming like a weeaboo because I adore JPop girl groups, but I like them for them, not because "ooh, Japanese culture..."

[identity profile] captain-emily.livejournal.com 2012-01-20 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
Not really feeling that outfit. It looks like something I'd wear to work in the garage, minus the Hammer pants.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-20 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
...you want to go around looking like a Japanese construction worker and not come across as a weeaboo? Good luck! I'm not usually one to point fingers and shout 'weeaboo' but seeing someone who isn't in Japan and wearing this as their work uniform would set off alarms for me. There are plenty of comfortable clothes in the world that you can't say that choosing to wear this is based solely on comfort. Wear what you like, but don't pretend it's not at least somewhat because it's Japanese.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-20 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
I thought wearing anime or hello t-shirts was considered weaboo fashion

(Anonymous) 2012-01-20 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
but op was referring to normal japanese fashion.

also... hello t-shirts? Hello! Project, perhaps?

The trick is moderation. If you're going around looking like a Japanese construction worker, you're going to get called a weeaboo. If you wear jika-tabi with jeans and a t-shirt every now and then, probably not.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-20 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
I've been a fan of Japanese construction/utility worker clothing for years and the fact that I have no good excuse to wear such stuff makes me sad. You have good taste, OP.

[identity profile] streetcake.livejournal.com 2012-01-20 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
Well isn't there a difference in liking stuff from Japan and obsessing over stuff just because it's Japanese? I mean, I'm sure you liked those clothes for more than simply because it's comfortable, but it's not like the main reason you bought them is because they're Japanese.

Also, I looove construction/garage suits, so that outfit is making me ache with want. :C The flower patterns don't help!

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2012-01-20 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
I feel you OP. My old teacher is a Buddhist monk, and he'd wear his Buddhist Monk clothes to school every day, and they always looks so friggen comfortable...

[personal profile] meadowphoenix 2012-01-20 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
Huh. I would just think you look like a painter. I mean, painters wear stuff like that. I'm not getting what's so obviously Japanese about it, except for the shoes. I mean, it's basically a jumper and a tool-belt...

(Anonymous) 2012-01-20 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
If you walk around in outfits like that, you kind of deserve to be called a weeaboo OP

(Anonymous) 2012-01-20 08:52 am (UTC)(link)
I guess the problem is that Japanese fashion in the US goes hand in hand with idiotically strict rules about the "lifestyle" that goes along with it? Example: The goth-loli fashion scene in Japan is about clothes. That's it. You try to get involved in some of the communities in the US and they start yelling at you telling you you're doing it wrong. Or so my roommate tells me. She actively refuses to associate with American goth-lolis because they are incredibly clique-ish and childish.

[identity profile] gheofabulousduk.livejournal.com 2012-01-20 04:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I wore nothing but toraichi pants (like the ones in the picture) for YEARS, because dear god are they comfortable. Not because they're Japanese, just because I have never found pants quite that comfortable. (Also they came in every color, and were dirt cheap when I was in Japan.)

My main problem was that people insisted on calling them hammerpants. Which for whatever reason I found irritating. Never much ran into the weeaboo problem.

It's a common misinterpretation. Hammer pants, parachute pants, harem pants, toraichi pants, etc all tend to get confused by people that are generally unfamiliar with the given type and just sort of lump them in together.
