um... used book stores exist?

[identity profile] smittenlotus.livejournal.com 2012-01-20 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Have you tried looking for used copies of these books online? You should examine alternatives before immediately jumping to stealing property.

There are a CRAP TON of copies, new and used, available on Amazon.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-20 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
You can find quite a few of them on Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=alvin+schwartz+gammel&x=0&y=0) for around $5-6 used (there's also a boxset for $22).

Please remember that there's probably someone else like you, to whom these books were really important growing up, coming to the library one day, only to find that someone stole them all. Libraries are all about sharing so many wonderful works with everyone. Please don't be selfish.

But now no one else will be able to experience them like you did...

I'd check online; I don't know any off the top of my head, but there are used booksellers online.

[identity profile] bluelimeade.livejournal.com 2012-01-20 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
First I would like to say that I am very happy to see a "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark" secret. I loved those books as a kid (still love them now, actually!) and I checked them out from the library in town all the time. :)

However, would you please, please return those copies to the library? It would be highly unfair to leave young readers devoid of these potent sources of nightmare fuel. I highly doubt they're impossible to find; wasn't there a reprint a few years ago? I could have sworn I saw a new copy at a book store in 2010. (Though sadly I don't think that edition had the pictures! :/) If they really are out of print, you could always look on eBay, Amazon, or used book stores like the anon above said.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-20 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
There are tons of ways to get them legally. Used bookstores might have them, Amazon, Ebay has all three of them for ten bucks right now. There's no reason to be stealing them from the library, where you're just making sure no one else gets to look at them.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-20 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
You are a dumbass. Like people said you can get this shit for cheap.

I stole money out of my little sister's piggybank to buy those books at the Book Fair when I was in elementary school :(

[identity profile] kindlycoyote.livejournal.com 2012-01-20 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Amazon, go to Amazon you mother fu-

*takes deep breaths*

Sorry, I work in a Library so THIS REALLY FREAKIN' TICKS ME OFF. Do you know how many people love books? Do you know how many kids are dropped off by their parents at libraries using them like some fucked up day care, so the kids just sit quietly and read? Do you realize what joys you are preventing people from discovering by stealing those books? You HAD them. You had the joy of reading them and now you are taking away the chance for someone else to discover them. I'm sorry, but that is NOT ok. If someone did that to the one copy of Ronia the Robber's Daughter in our library I would go beserk, and I'm pretty sure that it isn't out of print (however, it's not like libraries can afford to re-order it in todays economy).

So, TL'DR-

GIVE THE BOOKS BACK. OTHERWISE I AM TEMPTED TO CALL YOU NASTY THINGS, BUT I AM TRYING TO BE NICE.

OP here. I've checked every used book store close to me and several not-so-close, and I've been unable to find any. I'm currently unable to buy anything online, I've donated dozens of books to the library before that should be more than enough to replace it, and they've got about five copies of each one. It's not like I've swiped every single copy they had, just ones for me to keep for the rest of my life. Besides, I took the ones in the worst condition, the ones where the covers were about to fall off (I had to tape one back together), so they probably would have trashed them by the end of the year anyways. I know this doesn't excuse breaking the law, and I still feel awful for it, but there's no other way for me to get a copy.

THOSE BOOKS! They were so freaking much of my childhood. The illustrations gave me nightmares, and kept me up some nights but i kept going back to them. ♥

I wonder what happened to my copies?

Stealing books from the library is really not cool, OP.

In addition to everything said here already, the library can charge you for the full amount of each of those books, which is likely more than you'd pay to find them elsewhere. You could be sent to a collections service, which will screw up your credit rating.

Take the books back and stop being immature.

[identity profile] tropermariko.livejournal.com 2012-01-20 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
Please don't steal those books from the library. :c As much as I hate those books because they scare the crap out of me, doesn't mean others don't like them. Even if he library's got a million copies of a book, you still shouldn't steal one. It's not right. If I took a book that I loved from there. . .well, let's say there wouldn't BE any books left.

[identity profile] tenshihitomi.livejournal.com 2012-01-20 06:44 am (UTC)(link)
I still have my original copies of 1 & 3 that I bought at a book fair many moons ago. Never owned the second one (read it, though) as a child, but I finally obtained a copy as an adult. Add me to the list of folks saying that these books scared the living shit out of me. And people wonder why I turned out so strange:)

[identity profile] lit-wolf.livejournal.com 2012-01-20 03:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd bet my entire collection of books that you posted this secret out of guilt, hoping people would post 'Oh go for it, OP! You deserve those books!'

I say you're an idiot.

Like so many others have said, you are depriving the books from other children. Why can't you just check them out of the library, read them, enjoy the memories, and then return them? You can check them out whenever you wish. They are there at your fingertips without needing to steal them.

I hope you continue to lose sleep over it until you take them back. Feel the guilt because you sure as hell deserve it.

Please return the books.

Better World Books has thirty copies of various books in the series, and the prices are low, the shipping cheap/free and they donate books and money to aid literacy all over the world.

http://www.betterworldbooks.com/scary-stories-to-tell-in-the-dark-H0.aspx?SearchTerm=scary+stories+to+tell+in+the+dark

Check also ABEbooks, and, honestly....anywhere online that sells books. Are you really that bad at google?

[identity profile] hunter-san.livejournal.com 2012-01-20 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
OP I'm very angry at you. You can get cheap copies of your book on amazon! You can still order new copies through bookstores for $15ish!

I have 3 out-of-print books I want that are available on amazon. Demand has put them into the $100 pluses and one of the books is not available at all! I've been searching on-and-off for 2 years for copies of these books.

I still wouldn't STEAL it from a LIBRARY. Maybe if lots of other people read it at the library it would be printed again.

Try and justify it all you want, this is a dick thing to do OP. Take it back to the library and pay the $5 to get it off amazon or order it through your local book store. I could almost understand if it was out-of-print, uncommon and unavailable on amazon but it ISN'T. It's easily available at cheap prices online. You have no excuse!

At the very least, pay the stolen fees so the library can go buy new copies!

Why not even just photocopy the pages and keep them?

[identity profile] twyla-hime.livejournal.com 2012-01-21 12:37 pm (UTC)(link)
lol
I think this secret kind of backfired on OP.
Anyways, I hope they will reconsider what they've done and return the books. Several really good options have been suggested here.

[identity profile] kateshort.livejournal.com 2012-01-21 02:30 pm (UTC)(link)
The version with the illustrations you posted is out of print, yes. That said, there are versions NEWLY PUBLISHED with different illustrations by Brett Helquist... which any decent bookstore should be able to get for you, assuming they don't already have it in stock. http://amzn.com/0061980935 is the link to the boxed set.

Also, if you went to a used book store, did you specifically ASK if they were able to get them-- to order copies of the older version? It may be possible that a used book store might be able *and* willing to place an online order for you, and have it shipped to them or to you, as long as you pay up front the cost for them to get it for you.
