I cannot speak for all of the welcome messages (Mine was Ravenclaw) but it was supposed to be written from a prefect so they are probably all a little braggy, but Ravenclaw's welcome letter has to be four times that long.

Well, you had seven books full of information about Gryffindor.

Not all that much, really. We obviously got info about the common room, but Slytherin and Ravenclaw got that as well. We learned even less about Godric than we did about Salazar and Rowena. Just because most of the characters were from Gryffindor doesn't mean we learned all that much about the house itself...

Now the other houses have all that PLUS extra, fun info on famous witches and wizards in history. We know less about Gryffindor than the other houses now.

"Gypped" is a really offensive racial slur against Roma people (aka, "Gypsies"), and I really hope you simply didn't know that.

In the future, "cheated" is perhaps the words you want, rather than a term which reinforces the stereotype that an entire ethnic group are thieves.

I figured that since seven books pretty much outline the good and bad in Gryffindor, a longwinded explanation would be unnecessary?

Ugh, how irritating. JKR's blatant Gryffindor bias was bad enough, but explicitly saying that Gryffindor is the best house is just insufferable.

ETA: Yes I know, unreliable narrator and all, but seriously it feels more like narrator-as-mouthpiece.

Why were all the spells in Latin? If you're not European is there no magic for you?

If you're not European it's probaly all voodoo and shit.

If you're not european you probably use different spells with different names that have origins from your area.

It's like alphabets and numbers, they change depending on the region.

Oh my god I just realized that I FORGOT about Pottermore. I haven't been on in weeks. Is is still in beta? I bet is is. Damn. I need to go check it out again and see if anything's changed. \:

Seriously, this. It's kind of a shame that they closed off beta for so long. I'd almost be willing to give my account up to someone who hasn't gotten to play with it, if I could "reset" it, you know? As it is, it's pretty worthless now that I've already tried everything out. Meh.

I don't really care about hearing more about Gryffindor after seven books but yeah it did seem weird that Percy wouldn't write a more detailed letter. Even though the player probably knows a ton about the house, the character they're playing is still a new student who obviously hasn't read the series.

We heard about a lot of Gryffindor STUDENTS, but we didn't hear all that much about the history of the house at all. We know more about Slytherin and Ravenclaw from the books... the only house legitimately left out was Hufflepuff.

Now the other three houses have really cool trivia about their histories and such, but Gryffindors are basically stuck with knowing what our common room looks like and the very limited info on Godric Gryffindor--less than we got on Rowena and Salazar in the BOOKS.

I thought that the short letter was so like Percy. It's just so smug! "Gryffindor is best house! Proof: Dumbledore is a Gryff. If you don't like this logic, eat me."

Me too! When I saw the Gryffindor letter, I laughed pretty hard. It just seemed so like Percy.

I'm pretty sure JKR addressed this already. Iirc, she said something along the lines of the other houses getting more history as a sort of consolation prize.
