(Anonymous) 2012-01-23 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)No, it's not just you. I've thought he was a dick ever since I was first exposed to him through some animated batman program I saw as a child. It was missing context (I hadn't seen the full episode) but he'd just killed some kid's parents or something, and was basically telling him to deal with it 'cause it's not that bad. All I could think was, "This guy's the hero?!" When I later learned that his whole angsty spiel was centered around his own parents' murders, I was even less sympathetic.
Guy's a douche.

Also, how Bruce feels about killing isn't exactly *NOT* relevant when Jason is trying to get *Bruce* to kill the Joker and not just let Jason do it.

Basically. And even then, Bruce had to try to make Jason understand somehow. That's hard as hell and it comes out dickish, but IMO, he was trying to get Jason to understand that it's not that he hasn't ever considered killing the Joker, that he didn't want to kill him for killing Jason -- he did, and he DOES want to do these things. Killing his enemies would be easy. Killing the Joker to avenge Jason would have been super easy and satisfying. But that's why he knows he can't ever do it.
Jason felt betrayed that Bruce never killed the Joker for taking him away from him, and that he wouldn't even do it now. That he couldn't convince him to. Bruce needed to let him know that it wasn't a flippant decision -- it's a difficult decision he makes all the time, but one that is incredibly important.
But there's no easy, non-jerkish way to tell your murdered son that it's personally important to you that you DON'T kill his murderer, and that it's an incredibly difficult decision to have had to make, and continue to make. I don't like Batman all that much, and I think he's a dick most of the time, and there are certain things I resent him for -- but this isn't one of them. I wouldn't know what to do if I were in his shoes in this situation.

"Batman is a psychotic who scares people; he draws on superstition and the power of darkness. He's disturbed -- he's never recovered from the murder of his parents -- he's never been able to let that go, it's the primary thing that drives his life. Bruce and Batman are both just eight years old. I don't think either one of them is mature. I think in some ways he's the least mature character of them all."
I think that's totally true, and it makes me both love and hate Bruce/Bats. He's a noble character in a lot of ways but he HASN'T ever moved past his personal tragedies, so I think because of that he's largely closed off from emphasizing with other people. He can understand and analyze them, sure, and even occasionally show great bouts of sympathy, but not empathy.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-23 12:09 am (UTC)(link)Jason Todd was somebody close to him, once. But now he's a murderer.
This is how batman thinks, and has always thought. Regret and empathy is for after the murderer is stopped.

I love the fatherly incarnations of Bruce, but the messed up ones are interesting, too. Yes, he's an awful father, but it just makes him all the more fascinating. Besides, if the Batclan was more like The Waltons, they wouldn't be nearly as interesting. :p

(Anonymous) 2012-01-23 04:25 am (UTC)(link)Of course, Bruce isn't doing anything to help Jason get out of this cycle of self-loathing, retaliation, trying to mend relations and be apart of the family, then screwing it all to heck, again and again because everyone in the damn family hasn't seen the pattern and haven't tried you know being there to support him and snap the cycle. You know because telling him to get help and badmouthing him isn't really a good thing to do for someone suffering from a possible type of low-grade depression.
I am watching Under the Red Hood right now. BB!Jason is adorables.
