Oh god, did I send in this secret in my sleep or something?

Plus, it ticks me off how EVERYONE is so freakin' idealized unless they are a villain or something. Perry White used to be chubby, looking like the classic editor. Now? Ripped like he bench-presses most days. WTF? The artists seem to do no research on what people actually wear (Lois Lane in the new Superman comic books- case in point. Since when did high-powered news people wear mini-skirts, purple lipstick, and just-outta-bed hair?) and everything is so STIFF.

I got used to the movements of motion and panel layout that was done so well in manga. Now the layout is so stiff, the figures are so stiff, that it sets my teeth on edge. The last comic book that I read and truly enjoyed was Neil Gaiman's Sandman series. And that is because he got brilliant artists to do whatever the hell they wanted in the comic book! You know, instead of following a contrived layout.

/rants

...Sorry, I just have feelings about this. I would love to get into American Superhero comic books, but Marvel and DC really need to get their ass in gear if they want to actually bring people in. Most of the comic book industry doesn't seem to realize that it needs to change and adapt with the world instead of just doing half-assed reboots. (Though Marvel is doing a great job with the movies, and knows how to do their shit there. And they didn't doa half-assed reboot, so good for them!)

A lot of the same points could be made about manga - why do women in their mid-twenties often look like teenagers, and consistently have soft features and childish mannerisms? And why are skirts on school uniforms half the length they would be in real life?

[identity profile] kindlycoyote.livejournal.com 2012-01-23 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
I actually quit reading Manga two years ago because of those issues, which is why I was only using manga in the panel/stiffness part of the comparison.

My tipping point there was Hetalia making Joan of frickin' Arc all soft~ and delicate~ and childish~desu!

SHE IS A BAD ASS MOTHER EFFER, YOU JERK-OFFS.

...Yeah, that cheesed my toast. It's just, what? Why would you turn THE Joan of Arc into some delicate ideal of your culture instead of making her the tough teenager that ordered the death of two men by being thrown over the wall because they questioned her orders?

/end rant

But yes, I don't read Manga anymore. I tried with another series, but that one had so much half-naked female with big bazongas fan service that I threw it away.

[identity profile] lovelycudy.livejournal.com 2012-01-23 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
What arc? You mean the reincarnated one? Because really, that's just some teenager.

Also, Hetalia hardly has any action/jaded characters at all. It'no not against one particular historical character. Maria Theresa was a BAMF too and she just looks like a queen.

[identity profile] kindlycoyote.livejournal.com 2012-01-23 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
No, the first time she appears. I remember flipping through a couple hundred pages like crazy trying to find out the part where she beats up England. (I love England in Hetalia, and I certainly miss the fandom at times, but I just adore Joan of Arc in history and so that kinda pressed all my wrong buttons in that scene).

And true enough, I just wish the artist didn't go quite so extreme with Joan in a war scene. I mean, even France had some BA moments in that page! And the whole joke was about how France had to use a girl, instead of the end of the joke being how said Girl proceeded to kick ass.

Urgh, just rubbed me the wrong way. Mind, this was a couple years ago, so he could have changed it up since then. I only vaguely heard about the reincarnation later on.

[identity profile] lovelycudy.livejournal.com 2012-01-23 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
I hope Hima never shows Joan of Arc beating England up. I would be terribly sad if that's all we get of the Hundred Years War. Like, really sad.

I remember now. Yes, the joke was on France and I can't say I mind. As I said, M. Theresa appears to be just another queen and she was amazing. Then again, Hungary is shown as a warrior, so I'm not sure I can agree.

[identity profile] kindlycoyote.livejournal.com 2012-01-23 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I simply meant for that battle (though depending on what battle it was), or not beating him up directly- but a quick final panel that shows that England lost that particular fight and in shock would have gone a long way to make it hilarious.

As I haven't read the M. Theresa bits, I will take your word for it. But the Hungary parts were awesome. As I said, Joan was merely a tipping point for me as I am a big fan of her in history. (Although I do wish we saw more of dressed-as-a-boy!Hungary, but that may be my love of crossdressing characters who do it because it's comfortable as compared to some overall 'gotta get into x school' theme.) It was Joan as a tipping point, but a lot of other stuff lead up to it. I'm sure he wrote other historical characters in ways which other fans might agree/disagree with with a lot more humor than me. Like I said, it just pushed aaaalll my wrong buttons in that scene.

[identity profile] lovelycudy.livejournal.com 2012-01-23 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
I understand it. I've never been much interested in Joan of Arc. I love the Hundred Years War (well, as much as you can love it) but I'm more interested in the first part of, especially under Edward III (and Agincourt, of course).

Tbh, I wish we could see more Medieval strips. Or Tudor/Valois era strips. The 20th century is fine and dandy, but I want my kick-ass England.

[identity profile] kindlycoyote.livejournal.com 2012-01-23 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
Yessssss. Dang, more Medieval stuff would definitely have a chance of sucking me back into Hetalia. I am such a history nerd, but 20th century stuff just doesn't do as much for me as the older stuff.

And I would possibly sell my soul to see some stuff based off of Tacitus's works. Agricola and Germania? YES PLEASE.

[identity profile] lovelycudy.livejournal.com 2012-01-23 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
*Nod nod*

I want the fall of the Roman Empire so badly. It's scary.

Which popular manga are you talking about? Because nothing in the best selling manga series of 2011 has anything that fits that description:

1) Have you met any Japanese women in their mid-twenties. Often... they actually act like that. Google "Burikko". Also Asians tend to look young to white eyes. And the skirts are that short in Japan... girls roll up the regulation uniforms. Depends where you are (is it just me or do they wear them shorter in Okinawa?) but yeah it's just teenaged girls trying to look cute/sexy.

So... manga reflects real life. Surprise surprise.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-24 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
Except, Burikko is an act. It's a deliberate attempt to look childish, feminine and nonthreatening because that's what Japan thinks women are supposed to be like, and it's really creepy.

[identity profile] lazzchan.livejournal.com 2012-01-23 03:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I worked with a 40-some year old teacher and she looked younger than me. A lot of them look really young for their age. As for the uniforms-- the girls make them shorter. The amount of girls that wore the uniform the right length was very small.
