I am torn. My first reaction was an exuberant YES PLEASE NOW. But then I realized how much they'd probably mess it up, as they always do when converting books to film, and then I'd be sad.

I have to agree with you. :(

[identity profile] helplessdancer.livejournal.com 2012-01-25 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Totally agreed.

This is what I was coming here to say. I recently re-read the books, and I have very little faith of the books actually being done right, particularly considering the view on sex/relationships.

[identity profile] ladycallie.livejournal.com 2012-01-25 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
This exactly. Tortall is my childhood, I'd be devastated to see it fucked up.

[identity profile] cloud-riven.livejournal.com 2012-01-25 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
I'd rather have a series tbh. Movies either cram either too much or too little in a limited time frame, and I'd just end up being one of those "IT DIDN'T FOLLOW THE BOOOOOOOK" people by accident.

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2012-01-25 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
That would have the potential to be really awesome or really horrible... But I would watch it in a heartbeat! O_O

Also, OP, have you heard of the Tortall Comics Project (http://tortallcomicsproject.deviantart.com/)? It's nothing official, but it's still worth a look-see. :)

I'm a small part of that and it's awesome to see it develop. :)

Why not both?

[identity profile] the-kumquat.livejournal.com 2012-01-25 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
On the one hand, I would personal strangle a hundred puppies to get any adaptation of any of the Tamora Pierce books -- film, television show, cartoon, whatever. On the other, these books were -- in fact still are -- a huge part of my life and my inspiration for who I am today, that if they got anything wrong, I would probably have a some sort of fit.

[identity profile] oroburos69.livejournal.com 2012-01-25 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
I'd be afraid that it'd end up focusing on the boring romance bits instead of the Alanna is Awesome bits...I think I just have an instinctive fear of my favorite childhood novels being made into movies though. Particularly after How to Train Your Dragon. I think the movie is better, but it had almost nothing to do with the books! What if they did the same thing to Alanna?

...Besides, Protector of the Small is better suited to a film adaptation.

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2012-01-25 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Protector of the Small is better suited to a film adaptation.

YES.

I love Kel, and a movie with her...!

[identity profile] cure-light.livejournal.com 2012-01-25 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe many years ago when I was naive and before they ruined Ella Enchanted still trusted movies makers with my favorite books I could've agreed with you, but a SotL movie would probably be terrible.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-25 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
I liked the movie Ella Enchanted, but in my head the book and the movie are completely different. Like... not even worthy of comparison, because aside from names and one trait in the female lead, they're nothing alike. Same goes for the Howl's Moving Castle anime. Both times after I watched the movies with my mother I told her, "You know, you could read the books after watching the movie and not even be spoiled for the ending."

Yes, this. Ella Enchanted us pretty much the reason I don't want Tamora Pierce movie adaptations. I mean, it was like they took all the character's names and just made a completely new story!

Ella Enchanted and The Dark Is Rising -- oh, wait, sorry, I mean The Seeker /HEAVY SARCASM -- were the ones that made me bitter and disenchanted re: book-to-movie adaptations.

[identity profile] runonmoonlight.livejournal.com 2012-01-25 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
I just find it sad that we have so few movies with girl/women protaganists like that that we think like this when one shows up.

I'm still bitter though at how much they fucked up The Golden Gompass though.

[identity profile] lazzchan.livejournal.com 2012-01-25 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
To the point where they'll never make the 2nd and 3rd book into a movie? I wanted Will, dangit!

[identity profile] lazzchan.livejournal.com 2012-01-25 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think I'd like to see the Alanna books made into a movie-- they're varied in terms of scenes, ages, location, etc and besides, I'd have the everloving cynical heart of mine going 'they'll screw it up'. D:

I'd love to see the Daine books or the Kel books into a series/movie but again-- the same problem with ruining it. I'll just hug my books.

I just really, really wish I was remotely excited for Brave. The animation looks nice, but... I just can't stand Rebellious Princess narratives nine times out of ten, and the trailer makes it seem like it's going to be another of those SHE WANTS TO DO BOY THINGS AND HATES GIRL THINGS ZOMG movies, and as somebody who likes boy things and girl things, I am just really sick of the unnecessary dicotomy. But it's a kid's movie, so lol nuance what nuance.

(I remember Tamora Pierce being quite good about having knight characters that liked sewing and so on. I think her series' would make a better animated series though.)

[identity profile] immasammich.livejournal.com 2012-01-25 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. Unrelated but this bothers me about this movie a little bit. The whole "Female fantasy heroine" angle they're playing is not exactly new. Just newer to animation. (I do still appreciate it though) But I would rather have an adaptation of something fantastic that already exists instead of another (perhaps amazing) original story.

Also, gosh I really want this one too. Or just any Tamora Pierce book adaptation really. I know they'd screw it up and I'd be mad, but I'd be happy even just to rage at it. Other fandoms are so obliviously lucky.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-25 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
Uh...I love that series too, but what does it have to do with Brave? Unless you're implying you wish Pixar were to adapt it instead of making their own story?

I just don't really get it.

Way back when I was in pretty deep with the Tortall fandom, I remember one discussion about any possible adaptions. Someone said something about 'riding to Hollywood on a rusty bike and scratching out producers eyes'.

I still kinda agree with that. The ways in which it could be ruined are endless...

Though, I would give just about anything for an animated series. I just think that would be the best visual medium for an adaption. Magic can be expressed relatively easily, full control over the physical characteristis of the characters, etc.

Though I'd still be worried that the temptation to make characters too pretty would prove too great

(Anonymous) 2012-01-25 04:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, well, as a ginger and a Scot I'm pretty happy to see a film being made that not only deals with Scottish highlands myths and legends, but that also has a redheaded women as the lead. FREEDOM!
