Nope, I feel the same way.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-25 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
You're not alone, OP. I feel this way too.

[identity profile] atlanticmelody.livejournal.com 2012-01-25 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sort of the opposite where I like when things in my fandoms connect. "It's a small world after all" kind of thing.

[identity profile] cloud-riven.livejournal.com 2012-01-25 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Same. It'd just take away from the point of introducing new characters if it's all going to come back to setting up a situation for constantly alluding to the old ones. Which is concept that bores me unless it's in someone's fanfiction.

[identity profile] kitkat1327.livejournal.com 2012-01-25 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
(Slightly spoilery comment)

Same! I wish it was set a couple 100 years after the first series so I didn't have to see any of my favorite characters as lonely old people :(

I don't want this to be too related to ATLA either...but that's just me being selfish actually. I am a quiet Zutarian who twitches a bit at the thought of Aang and Katara with kids.

Even if they don't appear in this show I'm in despair that the mere mention of them together has made me not want to watch Korra.

;________;

Why am I so selfish? I knew since the end of ATLA that it would be like this.

[identity profile] malik-chan.livejournal.com 2012-01-25 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
I'm guessing you haven't seen the leaked clips. I am also guessing you don't remember when it was said that most of the Gaang is dead anyway.

There might be a flashbacks, there was a storyboard panel that showed the Gaang a little older, but I have no clue if that was cut.

And considering there's the metalbending police and it takes place in Republic City, there's ties to the Gaang.

[identity profile] ravenya03.livejournal.com 2012-01-25 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Ditto. The first series was great, but it was a completed, self-contained story which is now *finished*.

A few little nods to that will be great (and expected) but I want a brand new story, with brand new characters, settings and themes.

ext_396211: Fucking Gallaghers (Lilo and Nani)

[identity profile] sensualcoco.livejournal.com 2012-01-25 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
I kind of agree. Like I want to know what happened to the Ganng, but I don't really want it to be a part of Korra's story.

I pretty much agree, with the idea that I hope Korra doesn't focus too much on the Gaang for the wrong reasons. I really don't like when stories include flashback things or side-stories during the story at hand. It's not really "Korra's Story", then. I dunno, I don't mind the cameos as long as their relevant to Korra's tale at hand. Or if they do have cameos they're not paid much attention to. (Like Katara in that one clip?)

I would love if there were a few flashbacks to see how the Gaang got on, but LoK has got me embracing the new characters. They seem like they'd bring something new to the table.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-25 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
"his brother?" Bolin will be the best character ever.

[identity profile] dgcatanisiri.livejournal.com 2012-01-25 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
I'm the weirdo in the Star Wars fandom who complains about the small-universe syndrome of how, by startling coincidence some ancestors of X encountered ancestor of Y or Z just happens to be in the neighborhood when X and Y are wandering around and adventure occurs, so I totally get where you're coming from and agree with you. The more of these 'wink wink, nudge nudge' encounters of characters with direct ties to the previous series' characters, the more I roll my eyes.

[identity profile] clodia-risa.livejournal.com 2012-01-25 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
I completely agree. Granted, I'm not technically in the fandom because I think it's slightly silly to be in a fandom of something that hasn't aired its first episode, but I am looking forward to it. The mess of call-forwards that was the Star Wars prequel was the exact parallel I was looking for.

I think it's going to be awesome, I think a couple of references will be fine. However, I hope that it's mostly placing these figures into their appropriate place in history, not because they're secretly the new characters godfathers, etc.

[identity profile] streetcake.livejournal.com 2012-01-25 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
From what I've seen in teaser clips, only Katara is alive. And since Korra leaves the village where she is, it'll be pretty much a brand new cast.

Not a member of this fandom, but I couldn't imagine myself feeling much differently about it if I was. Though, I like cameos and flashbacks in moderation and I think it's fine to dig them back up for a couple seconds every once and a while as long as showing the past events make a point that's relevant to the current story. But I hate it when characters are brought back for fan service, even after their part in the story should have ended and their presence seems out of character for them and makes the whole thing feel forced. IMO it's just tacky and unprofessional to tell a story like that.

[identity profile] otakugal15.livejournal.com 2012-01-25 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately though, Katara is already shown to be involved with her in some way. Now whether that means she's related to her or not is still in the air. But yeah.

And of course, the Police Chief we see (that epic female police chief~) IS Toph's daughter, so....

We still don't know about Mako and his brother.

Over all though, I'm not that bothered if they are or not. *shrug*

..........that's a really good point

(I don't want a REUNION, I JUST WANT TOPH. THAT BITCH CAN NEVER DIE, OKAY. NEVER. PLEASE DON'T PROVE ME WRONG)

[identity profile] gabzillaz.livejournal.com 2012-01-25 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
I agree.

[identity profile] megalomaniageek.livejournal.com 2012-01-25 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
I sort of agree, sort of disagree.
I absolutely DESPISE it when long-removed sequels do nothing but reference the previous work with winks and nudges and even blatant stealing. It's the worst. But I actually really like that stuff in small doses.
Because what I also dislike are sequels and spin-offs that seem to have almost no connection to their predecessor. I recently went through Chrono Cross again and it just baffled me why they didn't just make it its own game. I'm still really wary of the Code Geass spinoff that's set in the same world which should have NONE of the same characters (though I imagine there'll be a small cameo, like Zero being shown on TV). It's different in this case because Avatar has a much better world to play around with whereas Code Geass' strength lay mostly in its characters, but I think the underlying principle is still there.

So anyway I think I'm going to be happy because it really seems like it's going to be its own story, but there will also be references and such to the ATLA series and the Gaang. I'm hoping there won't be too much, never enough to take away from this being Korra's story, but I think there should be room for some. I mean, Korra is the avatar. She is connected to Aang. The Gaang was connected to the previous avatar because of Zuko, also.
Also, the Avatar world has never felt small to me, so I guess I'm not that worried.

Yeah, you're not the only one, and in fact I think that the people who WANT it to be a gaang reunion are in the minority.

I don't mind flashbacks if they're relevant. Heck, I don't mind it having a LOT of gaang-related stuff in it, if it's relevant. It has to be about Korra and how the previous generation affects the decisions she has to make as the Avatar, not how the previous generation were so cool and Korra's story is just a framing device for the rest of theirs.

Luckily, it doesn't seem like that would happen. From what we know so far, it looks like Korra's story and Korra's story alone, even though the gaang's influence is still obvious in the world (as Roku's was in Aang's).

[identity profile] jazibelle.livejournal.com 2012-01-25 05:40 am (UTC)(link)
I feel exactly the same way as you do.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-25 07:18 am (UTC)(link)
I agree 100%. I'm not necessarily planning on watching it, but I liked it better when the Gaang was 100% dead. I want them to be figures from the past, not active roles or cameos. Really, Aang and Zuko are the only names that need to ever be mentioned in Legend of Korra, and that's only because they were the Avatar and the Fire Lord.

I really hate the idea of Toph's metalbending school in particular.

[identity profile] lokhlass.livejournal.com 2012-01-25 08:04 am (UTC)(link)
no, i get it. i always got the impression that the original cast weren't meant to be ~timeless heroes~ but rather just a bunch of pretty cool kids doing their best.

i want a *new* bunch of pretty cool kids. idk i seem to be one of few who doesn't really mind not getting closure about every single little character.
