I agree, 100%. One of my good RL friends is just... obsessed with it to the point of ridiculousness (bases all her projects- we're in art school) around it, doesn't stop posting about it on Tumblr, or talking about it if we bring up one particular anime series (whose she says she will never watch because of the fandom, she has a hipster mentality about it)... It's just ludicrous.

Another thing that irks me is everyone and their goddamn mother fawns over this, and nobody pays attention to Moffat's -other- modern-day retelling of a famous story: Jekyll. Because god forbid, the protagonist isn't some young attractive guy. I mean, it was released a good while before Tumblr and that so it's pretty obscure by now, but it just reeaaaalllly ticks me off that nobody pays attention to it.

Because god forbid, the protagonist isn't some young attractive guy.

Are you really going to use that argument with Cumberbatch as the lead?

(Anonymous) 2012-01-25 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
TRUE. At least James Nesbitt is all-around better looking at any age than a cat-lizard alien wearing a human skin.

I find Benedict Cumberbatch attractive, but I'll be damned if that isn't the best description of him I've ever heard. Kudos, good anon. Kudos.

I realise that it's a thing for people on F!S to go on and fucking on about how Benedict Cumberbatch is the most hideous creature ever to have been shown on screen, but there are approximately 75 billion rabid fangirls disagreeing with you, so in this context, that argument is pretty invalid.

But that is the point, isn't it? FANS OF SHERLOCK FIND HIM ATTRACTIVE. It stands to reason that Moffat's other stuff would have fans who would find the lead attractive; the problem is that it doesn't have fans, and that sounds like a problem with the show, doesn't it?

You're comparing apples and oranges. I wouldn't watch Jekyll because it's not my thing, I like quirky, funny, dramas. Jekyll is not that, Sherlock is. Also, I find David Tennant attractive but not Matt Smith, yet I still watch Moffat's "other stuff" and didn't abandon it because the lead was now less attractive to me.

I'll go a step further and say some fans have probably *watched* Jekyll now solely because they liked Sherlock so much they want to see what else the creators have done.

I totally love Jekyll (well, the first three episodes; the last three were a bit mediocre). I was so bummed when I learned there wasn't going to be a second series. And it got shown in many other countries beside UK as well (and was well-received), so I'm not sure why it didn't become as popular as it could have been.

Maybe, just maybe Jekyll wasn't as good? I bought it on DVD way before Sherlock, and while it was alright, it didn't grip me enough to finish it. It had nothing to do with any perceived attractiveness or lack thereof when it comes to James Nesbit.

I loved Jekyll lots, and was disappointed to find that it didn't have a large and active fandom (which doesn't mean I think Sherlock SHOULDN'T have fans, and I actually did enjoy the first series, which is all I've seen so far).
