I agree, tbh. I like the show. It's probably my favorite show on TV right now. But fucking hell, I'm tired of fandom acting as though it's the be-all-and-end-all of TV shows, or that Benedict Cumberbatch is OMG!So!Sexy! and OMG!The!Best!Sherlock!Holmes!Ever!, or posting gifs and screencaps EVERYWHERE (and I want to punch the assholes posting spoilery pics just minutes after the lst ep aired). It's just sooo.....arrghh!

It's a shame. Because it honestly is a good show and I can't even appreciate that fact anymore, and because so many people I was close with in the general Sherlock Holmes fandom have converted to strictly BBC and it's just...too much.

I agree, 100%. One of my good RL friends is just... obsessed with it to the point of ridiculousness (bases all her projects- we're in art school) around it, doesn't stop posting about it on Tumblr, or talking about it if we bring up one particular anime series (whose she says she will never watch because of the fandom, she has a hipster mentality about it)... It's just ludicrous.

Another thing that irks me is everyone and their goddamn mother fawns over this, and nobody pays attention to Moffat's -other- modern-day retelling of a famous story: Jekyll. Because god forbid, the protagonist isn't some young attractive guy. I mean, it was released a good while before Tumblr and that so it's pretty obscure by now, but it just reeaaaalllly ticks me off that nobody pays attention to it.

I don't hate it, but I feel where you are coming from. My tumblr dash is a constant stream of sherlock fangirling. If they were posting interesting things about the show, I wouldn't care, because I love the original sherlock stories, but it's a constant stream of "X character is hot" "OMG THEY ARE IN LOVE" "OMG THEY ARE FUCKING".

It's tiresome. I'd unfollow them but I'm friends with them all so I can't.

It kind of annoys me that the OTT fangirls are giving the whole fandom a bad name - like, the ones who were all over omegle around when the new episodes aired pissing everyone off (seriously, even I got annoyed and I consider myself a massive fan). Or who go mental all over tumblr, etc, every time a new bit of info/pic is brought out.

...can I ask what they're doing in particular? So far, it doesn't seem to be filled with more/less crazy fans, weird kinks or vehement anti-fans than any other fandom.

how is it impossible for you to avoid a huge group on the internet?

Don't get me wrong, I get it. If I negatively associate a fandom with the source material, it totally does affect the way I enjoy or consider trying it. But in those cases, I just turn away and actively ignore the group or whatever aspect is particularly annoying. It might take a couple days, weeks, or a year for the irrationality to pass. Sometimes I even just check out the source material to see what the fuss was about, as I did with Sherlock actually.

But still. Do you just suck at going online or something?

It's actually a pretty awesome fandom. Hardly any drama or shipping wars, lots of creativity and love.

I completely agree with you. I never get too involved with fandom because I find the crazed fans to be off-putting. Unfortunately the Sherlockmania has spread into RL and parts of the internet I don't usually associate with fandom.

Is this your first time in fandom? Because in basically every fandom of decent size there are the really crazy people, the obsessed people, etc, and it's really not as hard to avoid them as you seem to think.

Fandom can be a pain in the ass, and I don't think it's as easy to avoid as most people say - at least, not if you still want to actually *partipate* in fandom. Sometimes it feels like you either have to put up with the crap, or cut yourself off completely.

My fandom was pretty shit this year - rampant misogyny toward the girls and endless hysterics over a run-of-the-mill bromance that I find utterly tedious; but the only thing you can really do is remove yourself from the worst places, find LJ friends that like the same things you do, and concentrate on the fics that deal with the subjects that you're interested in.

Of course, I'm not on Tumblr, and I've heard that's where most of the wank takes place.

I haven't seen anything horrible from this fandom, other than my dislike of the "Believe in Sherlock" and the "Brooke is innocent" memes (like, seriously, where the fuck did they come from?) but even that has its upsides. I've heard it's good and if the fans shared quotes or something maybe I'd get interested. But all I ever see is "OMG OMG I'M DYING!!!!" and that doesn't make me want to join in.

Um, stay out of fandom? I've recently gotten into Community and after a brief foray into the fandom I'm steering away lest their cray cray makes me hate it. I'm still loving it (and can't wait for the hiatus to be over damnit!)
