This type of secret keeps showing up, so I have to ask - why is the concept of beauty being in the eye of the beholder so hard to understand? Some people think he is very attractive, some think he is very much not, and some don't see it either way - it's very subjective. I happpen to think his eyes are very pretty and I like his cheekbones.

THANK YOU.

And this is from someone who doesn't find BC attractive in any role other than Sherlock and it's 'cause of the personality he brings to that character...also pretty eyes and cheekbones.

These secrets keep showing up because they keep getting reactions. I don't take them seriously anymore, personally.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-25 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Because:

1. This is fandom secrets. This entire community is about personal opinions. This secret isn't any different.

2. A lot of people find BC attractive. A lot of people. Hell, it's almost considered blasphemy to not find him attractive in certain fandom communities. So no wonder some people are wondering "WTF" the hype is about. Especially when he is, let's face it, not a traditionally attractive man. A woman with a face like that would never get onto a television show.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-25 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, it is fandom secrets. My question was kind of in reply to theirs.

Oh, I don't know, Maggie Gyllenhaal has done pretty well and although I don't think she's unattractive, I wouldn't consider her traditionally attractive. Same goes with Laura Carmichael (Edith on Downton Abbey). But, I will agree that it's much easier for an interesting-looking man to get work as a lead than it is for an interesting-looking woman.

Which says alot more about televison than anything else.

Tilda Swinton kind of reminds me of BC, with her pale features and *interesting* (ie not conventionally attractive) face, and she has done quite well in Hollywood. Of course, she is a damn fine actress. But then again, BC seems to be pretty talented (I don't think I've ever seen him in anything other than Sherlock, but he seems to be a serious actor, from what i have seen and read).

(Anonymous) 2012-01-25 05:31 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, people are conflating dime-a-dozen ugly and unusual. BC's face is really unusual. People may not find him attractive, but those cheekbones and combination of features are aesthetically interesting and not found on many people. Art often isn't pretty but visually striking. Top models often aren't pretty. They're unusual and unique. Tilda Swinton definitely has the same thing going on.

THIIIIIS.

My good gravy people, beauty is 'effing SUBJECTIVE.

And /agree about his features. And I don't even watch Sherlock. (But long faces + cheekbones + intense eyes is a great combo for me. Add height and a distinctive nose? I will swoon.

...What? I have a type. >.>)

[identity profile] cloud-riven.livejournal.com 2012-01-25 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Because being contrarian makes for a secret that gets replies?

There's something so impersonal and dry about just stating an opinion about looks that I have a hard time taking it like some serious affront. Saying, "Oh hey, I really like/dislike this face," doesn't seem that big of a deal to me unless they're also saying they find the person's company or prescence is off-putting/enjoyable solely because of it.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-25 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
Well, yes.

The thing is, the secret maker didn’t write “I really dislike this face”, they wrote “He honestly has the ugliest face I’ve ever seen”. While it’s probably hyperbole, it has a much different connotation than just disliking his face. Then it’s followed up by “Why do so many fangirls think that he’s so attractive?!”, which implies that other people are wrong for finding him attractive, and that just isn’t cool.

[identity profile] cloud-riven.livejournal.com 2012-01-25 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
Implying shmaplying. So OP can't relate to a lot of people. Maybe they do consider most everyone else's opinions wrong. Whatever. It's not quite an issue of needing to know or care about all views, and getting all upset someone disagreeing with you (general you) about how handsome someone isn't, or is, is so dim. Huge waste of energy to justify your sentiments from either end.

I think this about pretty much anything though, not just looks. Stuff like being worried about not relating to a popular idea, not caring about a fad, loving bieber etc etc.

It's all okay. I will still love you, and we can still have cake together.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-25 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
I don't find BC attractive, even as Sherlock, but THANKS YOU so much.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-25 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
Beauty in the eye of the beholder, yes.

That aside, I always thought the point of fandomsecrets was to get the things off your chest you can't actually say aloud to you friends.

[identity profile] yuppu.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
I actually live by this, but tonight a friend of mine nearly bit my head off for saying he doesn't do anything for me.
Well, excuse me, you said the men I like are hideous (and you said so in such a brutal way I don't know how I did not attack you) and I can't say I don't find him beautiful?
