What gets me about this secret is the "protect her even if she hates him for it" thing. That's something I'd understand in a child/guardian relationship but between two people in love, no. It's this presumption that Eddiekins knows what's best for Bella and she doesn't, so she can't be trusted to make her own decisions about her own life. He ripped the engine out of her car to stop her from seeing a friend that he deemed dangerous, lurks about in her room watching her sleep (initially without her knowledge or permission) and once she got pregnant with her Demon Baby, he automatically decided that he was going to have it aborted and asked Jacob to get her pregnant with 'safe' babies without even consulting Bella on the matter. Not so much as a "Gee, I have never been, nor shall ever be pregnant, therefore I cannot possibly know what Bella is going through, maybe I should ask her how she feels about all of this." He just assumes that he knows best, whether because he's male and she's female or he's a vampire and she's human or he's a-hundred-and-whatever and she's seventeen (which is also creepy) is up for debate. Edward treats this girl he supposedly loves like a child--hell, not even a child, he treats her like a house pet.
