Also uh. Same-sex subtext isn't...really brushed off usually? Unless you mean by a mainstream audience for more mainstream properties. For the most part, if there's same-sex subtext, at least if it's m/m (and fairly often if it's f/f, too), the fandom is all over it.
I hope you're a troll, but it wouldn't surprise me if you aren't, sadly.

I've met too many people who really think like this -- mostly squealing women and girls at anime cons who assault random boys with yaoi paddles and smell like a pair of used gym socks -- to call troll with absolute certainty.

I do agree it's pretty gross when people do that for homophobic reasons, though, or when the media or critics, etc ignore it when they'd be all over it for het. Just. OP here makes it sound like same sex subtext is commonly ignored, and it...really isn't. Not to the extent they seem to be claiming.
