I don't really have much to say on the secrets today (sorry), but I just wanted to comment on how much I hate name smashes for ships. I see 'em everywhere both in and out of fandom, and I just don't get the appeal. Zutara reminds me of a fruit drink, Brangelina sounds like deodorant, Drarry makes me think of excessive body hair, etc. They are often confusing and just seem so pointless to me.

I hate them, too.

"TomKat" probably pisses me off the most (aside from disliking hearing about those two anyway). Her name isn't Kat or Katherine or Kate, it's Katie. Fuck off, ~trendy~ media, for being lazy about it.

What is the difference between Kate and Katie though?
They're both shortened forms of KATHERINE

I blame FF.net for limiting the size of summaries.

And I'm of mixed minds...Caskett for the win, but Jisbon for 100 million X not-win (there's a reaction video of someone telling the actors that their characters' pairing name is Jisbon...it's horribly wonderful). And Harmony sounds good! But I never connect it to a pairing. I'm always like, "I don't remember a Harmony..."

The important thing is to remember that it could always be worse--Harco, for example.

Actually, I think I prefer "Harco" to "Drarry". Drarry is just awkward-sounding.

Though really, they both suck.

Also, I wonder how much of an impact the FF.net summary limit actually had? I've never really thought about it, but it makes sense.

God knows they love to mash things up and shorten things.

This is an interesting and surprisingly plausible explanation for it in fandom. I just remember it cropping up in the media with 'Bennifer' in the early 2000s and it irked me even then. Now I try and find fic, and get confused as to who or what the hell some shoddy portmanteau is referring to. So frustrating.

Same here, unless they are funny, like Spork/Kock. xD They annoy me less in a ship with only Japanese characters as well, since the language is more suited for smoosh names.

I only like one. A lot of times I think they're confusing to people who are unfamiliar with the fandom. I looked up Glee fic once and I was like "WHAT ARE THESE THINGS??? Shell? Nokan? Timo? WHATTTT??"

I watched Glee up until recently, and only got that Shell is Shelby/Will, and the last one has Tina in it. :\

haha, I hate them too. the only time I ever use them is for website passwords

I like the sound of McShep because it's insular and the "Mc" prefix lends itself to pairing nicknames but alot of them are just not great.

I ~~don't really~~ miss the days of the Pokemon fandom, where you had to think of a catchy, creative name for your ship, not just smush two names together. Of course then nobody knew what the hell you were talking about, but it took effort!

"Swarkles" (Barney/Robin) is the only one I like, because it's two continuity in-jokes that only fans would get rolled into one, and because it's only ever used humorously. Of course, being from a sitcom helps.

Kum is my favorite ship name, because I have the immaturity of a five year old. Also Partie, it's weird how my favorite ship names come from a fandom that I really don't give a rat's ass about.

I once read a criticism that a pairing (don't remember what, but something Squeenix) "was thrown in the players faces. Like Tuna."

It was a minute or two before I connected it to Tidus/Yuna but the image of a pairing being like a fish forced upon a person will stay with me forever.
