Have you seen the original BBC miniseries with Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth? Because the movie is nowhere even close to matching up with that in any respect other than Tom Hollander playing a brilliant Collins (maybe the original BBC Collins was better, but he skeeved me out way too much to ever be able to say that, which is probably actually the point but whatevs).

Also... not even going to comment on the whole book thing, because other people have commented on it, and really if you think it in any way frivolous you are missing Austen's entire point in writing it completely.

But if you've not seen it, check out the BBC original version, because it is FAR better acted by everyone involved, and much more faithful to the text and era in style and substance imho.

I definitely agree that Jennifer Ehle's Elizabeth was much better acted than Keira Knightley's, but Colin Firth's Darcy felt so flat and unlikable to me.

Yes, and there is an earlier yet BBC adaptation too!! With some classy theatre actor named David Rintoul, who is the Darcy I fell in love with and damnit no one online seems to have seen this version ever. I mean, yay Colin Firth, no problem there, but you should SEE this other guy's cheekbones...

This! The David Rintoul/Elizabeth Garvie P&P is the definitive version for me. I find it warm and witty and charming and although no one is perfect, no one is hateful (okay, Wickham is a bit hateful). Lydia, Mrs Bennett and Lady Catherine are hysterical and Mr Bennett is just the right balance of rueful, lazy and irresponsible. Even Jane (quite the most insufferably perfect girl in all of literature) is likeable. Sadly AFAIK, this isn't available on DVD though I have a much treasured copy on video tape.

The BBC P&P with Firth/Ehle that everyone raves about leaves me cold; I disliked everyone in it, from start to finish. Considering I love the book, that takes some doing. Darcy is a dolt who just seems to chew his own teeth most of the time and as for Elizabeth - little more than a petulant shrew, pert and underbred and with an astonishing degree of unjustified self consequence.

I have seen the Keira Knightley movie and much to surprise I did not actively hate it. KK was flat and stale but the supporting cast were very good value and it had wonderful production values, music, costumes, etc.

But totally agreed: the Rintoul/Garvie P&P is the one for me.
