I can't stand Austen (*pause while FSers tell the OP and I how stupid we are*) so my opinion probably doesn't count but I enjoyed the film as a viewing experience miles more than the BBC adaptation. It had wonderful feeling in the two central performances. I was practically tied up at uni and told to watch the BBC series again because I was *obviously* just not getting it but nope, Colin Firth was still wooden and Jennifer Ehle was still too old for the character. Maybe it's just too faithful to be interesting to me.

As I have said, I don't mind if you don't like her. And certainly not calling anyone stupid. However, the OP did miss a huge point of the book by saying she saw it as 'frivolous'. There are many statements one can make about Austen's writing (Harsh towards some characters, can ramble on a bit, etc), but frivolous is objectively not true.

And honestly, I actually prefer parts of the new movie over the old. I actually liked Keira better than the old actress, in part because I felt the older actress played a harsher and less warm hearted Lizzie. Although Elizabeth is sharp of tongue, she certainly isn't a cold person! But there are things I like about both adaptations. *shrugs*

I actually really liked P&P as a book, but I'm so with you on the movie > BBC version. IDK, I just could not get into it, and no amount of watching/ attempting to watch will actually make me like it.

I like Austen but I'm with you. Jennifer Ehle looks like she's 30 (gorgeous, but not the right age to be Lizzie) and Colin Firth was really annoying. Plus, no Judi Dench. Judi Dench makes EVERYTHING better.

Judi Dench makes EVERYTHING better.

AGREED SO HARD. She is the *only* Lady Catherine as far as I'm concerned. In fact, I'm convinced the guy who wrote P & P & Zombies saw this version with his girlfriend/whatever and Judi Dench's general badassery is why his Lady C has an army of God damn ninjas.

Yes/yes? -_^
