I agree with her questioning Sherlock 100%. Calling him a freak every time she sees him and trying to drive John away, even 'for his own good', I'm not so keen on - it's bullying whether he seems to care about it or not.

This!

it's bullying whether he seems to care about it or not.

Which, in Sally's defence, Sherlock admitted himself - he doesn't care.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-28 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Then she was being extra-petty about it. And of course no one has ever lied about how much name-calling affects them, especially to the person doing it.

[identity profile] lolofielding.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Oh I meant him not caring about the people who were murdered, not whether he cared about what she thought about him. My mistake.

[identity profile] fenm.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, when she walked into the flat after Sherlock was arrested and starting playing the "I told you so" game... frankly I'm surprised John didn't punch HER, too.

[identity profile] lolofielding.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
I like to think John punching the chief inspector (?) was him unleashing rage built up over Sally, Lestrade and (a little bit) Sherlock himself. John looked ready to thump something before the guy even came into the room.

Oh, I do love BAMF John. Relevant side-note there.

[identity profile] fenm.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Ah... Yeah, he was kinda working up to it, huh? (-:

I agree, BAMF John is the best!

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
I think John didn't punch Sally because on some level he knew that Sherlock deserved shit from Sally, especially given that Sally and Sherlock had to work together a lot, and Sherlock isn't nice at all. but the police inspector was new, and didn't know Sherlock at all, and he had no right to say anything.

And, well, Sherlock kind of makes it hard for people to like him. He's an asshole. Sally knew him and knew that. The other guy didn't.

But, the pent up aggression thing works too. Maybe John wanted to, but also knew she was in the right a bit, enough to rein in his temper, but than the other guy who didn't know Sherlock wasn't allowed to say things about a guy he didn't know.

I don't agree with that at all.

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Fair enough.

I think so, though, and that effects how I watch it. /shrug

[identity profile] cobryn-moy.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 12:25 pm (UTC)(link)
The first time we meet Sally, doesn't Sherlock makes a crude and denegrating comment about her giving a colleague a blow job - in public, while she's working. I presumed from that that we were meant to understand right from the start that Sherlock's superpowers of crimesolvery go hand in hand with hideous disrespect for the likes of Donovan.

I mean, first time we see them interacting, he takes an obnoxious low shot. I think it's fairly obvious that her dislike for him is really well-founded.

[identity profile] fiwen1010.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 12:49 pm (UTC)(link)
He did that after she greeted him with 'freak' and expressed derision at the idea of him having friends. His was a low blow, but she struck first.

This theory gets a +1 from me. ^_^

He says himself "I always hear 'punch me in the face' when you're speaking, but usually it's subtext"

Apparently it was even louder from the inspector

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
I forgot about that, lol. |D

John: The Man Who Can Sense Subtext.

Yes. |D

I bet he would have. One problem; she's a woman.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-28 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
Because this is television, with John Watson as one of the good guys. Frankly, I wish he would have punched her; she's a cop, she's probably capable of taking care of herself, and some of the stuff she said was more than deserving of a punch from someone defending a friend.

/unpopular opinion which will probably get a slew of YOU DON'T HIT WOMEN comments

[identity profile] fenm.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I kind of feel this way, too...

[identity profile] wldcatsprstr-14.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
I agree.

I don't believe in horribly beating up anyone who is significantly weaker than you are, male or female.

I personally don't fight but I think that if a person hits you and you want to retaliate, you should be able to hit them back, regardless of their sex/gender. However, if you know one of your regular punches is liable to damage them severely and not just subdue them, you shouldn't go wailing on them. But if they can take it, let them have it.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-28 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
nope, because it would be seriously inconsistent to John's character to hit women because he's been strongly socialized not to, yeah?

(Anonymous) 2012-01-28 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
I'm actually really uncomfortable with/upset by the concept of people being punched/slapped by the good guy for, like, insulting someone's honor or being mean to someone's friend. I can't really decipher why. I wince at every punching scene in Sherlock.

That said, I'm glad Sally didn't get hit, just because the inevitable hundreds of gifs of the punching on tumblr with glitteringly insightful commentary like "lolol stupid bitch" would have really upset me.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-28 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
I always got the impression that she and Sherlock had some sort of history, so I've been withholding judgment a bit on her driving away his friends. Maybe she's reacting to the cruel things Sherlock says to Anderson, or even to Molly?

[identity profile] elica.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 06:45 am (UTC)(link)
Or to her.
It's tiring to hear someone always telling you you're dumb, you're stupide and you've no reason to be in the police anyway. If someone called me that all the times, I wouldn't have any trouble calling him a freak. It's even too gentle.
