There was a really excellent post-Reichenbach fic that - God help me - I can't find at the moment, but it had Sally really working through the evidence to find that a) he obviously didn't commit *all* of those crimes, some were accidental, crimes of passion, etc. and b) he may be a psycho, but he's a smart psycho, and there's no way that the great Sherlock Holmes would commit a crime of such immense stupidity (he would have smelled the oil, he wouldn't have left footprints, he wouldn't have let the kids see his face, and so on). It was good, because you can see how Sally could come to that conclusion in the moment, but she's also smart enough to maybe reconsider the evidence later (once Sherlock was gone).
