To be honest I think Sally is awesome as the sort of "love to hate" character. But her accusing Sherlock of being the kidnapper did annoy me for one reason. Why would Sherlock have been stupid enough to go into a room with a kid who would have recognised him if he was the kidnapper? I get her being suspicious before hand but no one even seemed to question that logic.

But I just put that down to bad writing. I thought that whole "let's make Sherlock out to be a fake" thing was all-together rushed and not as good as it could have been.

Honestly, I think that that was really well played in the show. Think, he's supposed to be a genius, yes? And a genius wouldn't be stupid enough to walk into the room with the kids if he was to be recognized.

However, there's the chance that he's not a genius- not the way people think. There's the chance that he had been manipulating evidence and committing the crimes himself. This would lead to him being a genius, but perhaps not as much of a genius that other people think he is. Maybe, when it's not about committing a crime, he's really not that smart. Of course, he can still solve crimes, as he has the criminal's mentality, and he can't have done everything.

So, you have this man who potentially gets 'off' on crime, metaphorically or literally. Who's smart enough to blame other people for his crimes, but maybe not as smart as everyone thinks. Or, at least, a different kind of smart. The difference between smart-as-a-detective and smart-as-a-storyteller. It's possible, if he's not actually as smart as everyone thinks, that he just slipped up, and didn't realize, and that's why the girl screamed.

At least, that's what I would be thinking.

Yeah that's a good way of looking at it, I guess. Another possibility I was thinking was that they think Sherlock is so far down the psychopath route that he believes in his own lie too much. Like he sets all these things up to play out his own story where he is this brilliant genius that he does forget for a second that he was the kidnapper and the girl would remember him because, in that moment, he's pretending to be the hero.

Basically, Shutter Island. :P

Though I still wish Lestrade or someone had said; "Why would he go in there if the girl was going to freak out?"

I haven't seen that movie, but that sounds like a completely valid possibility too. :)

True, though maybe they were going to bring it up after questioning?

I mean, I thought that's why they were trying to bring him in in the first place, just for questioning.

It's a valid point, of course. :)

I just don't think Sally not thinking of it right away is indicative of her being a bad cop.

While I think that the episode was great, it was filled with a bunch of plotholes. That's one of them. I tried to fanwank it by blaming it on Sherlock's lack of empathy. But it's still rather awkward...

There was a really excellent post-Reichenbach fic that - God help me - I can't find at the moment, but it had Sally really working through the evidence to find that a) he obviously didn't commit *all* of those crimes, some were accidental, crimes of passion, etc. and b) he may be a psycho, but he's a smart psycho, and there's no way that the great Sherlock Holmes would commit a crime of such immense stupidity (he would have smelled the oil, he wouldn't have left footprints, he wouldn't have let the kids see his face, and so on). It was good, because you can see how Sally could come to that conclusion in the moment, but she's also smart enough to maybe reconsider the evidence later (once Sherlock was gone).

Ooh, that sounds like a fascinating fic from your description. :3

[identity profile] emchelle.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 08:28 am (UTC)(link)
Found it! http://hope-tang.livejournal.com/160889.html

It's really good, and an excellent characterization of Sally.

Awesome, thank you for digging it up. :)

Yeah, especially since they never actually explained why the kid screamed at Sherlock. The episode had moments of brilliance but on the whole it had a lot of mistakes and I wish the team hadn't given it to their worst writer.

[identity profile] fairyday.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, this exactly. It did kind of spoil it for me for a minute, because all I could think was "IF HE'S FOOLED YOU FOR THIS LONG OF COURSE HE WOULDN'T MAKE SUCH A STUPID MISTAKE LIKE THAT WOULD YOU PLEASE STOP AND THINK FOR A SECOND."

But yeah, all you can really do is let it go, in the end.

I agree; the police force are annoyingly dumbed down in this series. And as if realistically anyone would believe something published in THE SUN.
