Before I started watching Sherlock (I was late to the game), I read a very well-worded little essay on Sgt. Donovan, and the inherent misogyny in all the fans who bashed her whilst merely loving-to-hate Anderson in a much more good-natured way. It pointed out that she was a woman who was doing her job, it pointed out a lot of things about the show, series, and attitudes among some fans, and I was determined to enter the show giving her a fair go. After reading that essay-let, I WANTED to like her-- as much as I have always loved Sherlock Holmes in any iteration, it doesn't prevent me from enjoying characters who hate him.

I couldn't. From the moment she entered in Study in Pink, she just... I hate to use the word 'trigger' because so many people feel it gets over-used, but I just flashed back to every girl I went to school with who pushed for my ostracization. I was ready to tamp down on the bad feelings brought up by the name-calling, because he clearly wasn't put off by it and wasn't exactly being friendly, to put it mildly, but warning a person she doesn't really know from so much as associating with the man crossed the line for me.

It's great honest characterization that she is committed to doing her job and all, and she has every reason not to like Sherlock, but that move from 'I don't like/trust him' to 'You shouldn't be around him' just left a really bad taste in my mouth.

Anyway, obviously we don't all have to like the same things, and personal opinions on fictional characters does not alter my respect for people. I've just been looking for a discussion on this character so that I could air my feelings, I guess.
