(Anonymous) 2012-01-28 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)The word 'freak'. I don't know about you, but I've been called a freak in all seriousness before and it fucking sucks. So for her to call Sherlock a freak makes me incredibly angry. He's a freak because he's above average intellect, because he can solve the crimes you can't, because he doesn't know how to act in social situations.
Let me ask you this, would you call someone with Aspergers or Down Syndrome a freak? I'm sure people will admit to doing it behind their back, but never to their faces. Now would you do that to their face? No. Not unless you are a cold hearted, mean spirited person. So is it fair to call someone a freak to their face just because they don't necessarily have a mental handicap assigned to them? I mean, he has an advanced mental state, so that makes it *okay* to call him a freak to his face? She always says it to his face, to the point where you wonder if she ever even called him Sherlock or Mr. Holmes or any variation in replace of that.
Not to mention how unbelievably unprofessional it is of her, as a member of the police force, to call him a freak while on duty. I'm assuming she never sees him any other time so. If a police officer in your area were to call you a freak or someone else even, and you were there to witness it, would you not be up in arms?
Next up is the "drugs bust". I like Lestrade, but I thought that was a low move, using police resources to force Sherlock's hand. But then we learn that the team volunteered to do it? So basically, she, out of sheer spite and dislike, decides to help abuse police power/resources just to attack this one man?
I also absolutely loathe the fact that, upon first meeting of John, the way she tells him to stay away from Sherlock. Not because she tells him, no, a warning would be warranted I suppose. Sherlock is a bit out there and odd. But the attitude, the way she said it, just like the word 'freak'. Also a completely unprofessional side to show to the public (John being the public in this case).
Now, as for a guy who "solves cases out of what?" thing. There are so many people playing witness to Sherlock's use of the crime scenes, his use of the forensics techniques. HIS USE OF A BRAIN. How can that be "out of what"? As someone with a criminal justice degree I can only HOPE that I'd be as attentive to a crime scene as he is.
And think about how long it takes her to decide to point out that she thinks Sherlock's the one who did it and possibly more? How many cases? She lets him solve all the crimes and cases up until the last episode. If she felt like he was the real threat, why didn't she go over Lestrade's head (like in the last episode) before then? Why didn't she try to stop Lestrade from bringing him in? She obviously has no problem speaking out against Sherlock otherwise. So why not before then?
Overall, I don't hate Sally Donovan because she "did her job". I dislike her for the way she handles her job. I dislike her for the way she treats people. I dislike her for the fact that, if she really thought he was all that bad, she could've done something prior to that episode. I dislike her because she gave me reasons to dislike her and her character was made to be disliked.
I dislike her, if we want to be plain and simple, because she was put into this series to be a dislikable character.
