Yeah, I don't think you can call it a fandom secret if it's something that you would find on the reviews on the Novel's back cover.

I don't think I'd like her in RL, but I love her as a character. She's one of my favourite female characters even if sometimes I want to hit her.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-28 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed completely, although I would argue the selfish thing. Because no matter how out for herself she is, she does a lot of really awful shit to save her family, half of whom she can't stand. She has a weird sense of honor that way -- look how she saves Melanie and her baby despite hating Melanie with every fiber of her being.

Also, a lot of the terrible stuff she does *has* to be done to keep everyone alive. It's just that she's the only one around who's ruthless enough to do it. Hell, if I was in that situation I'd almost want to have her character.

Honestly my biggest problem with Scarlett (aside from the racism) is how she treats her kids. Poor Wade and Ella probably grew up to be really fucked-up adults.

[identity profile] emthejedichic.livejournal.com 2012-01-29 06:34 am (UTC)(link)
ITA about the kids. I really want to write fic where they're older and totally screwed up.

[identity profile] ypsilon42.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Between her being incredible competent regarding money and general survival and being completly incompetent regarding any kind of emotion, she might be one of my favorite characters ever.

(But seriously, I don't get why people keep going about the racism in Gone with the Wind. I mean, yeah, I realise there is racism in that book. But the book is set 1861, and it was writen 1936 and society was a whole lot more racist that it is nowadays. I mean I am aware, that Scarlett's ideas would be racist by todays standarts, but she is a product of her times. It's not like it would make any sense, if she weren't at least a little racist.)

(Anonymous) 2012-01-28 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
+1 It's the kind of blind social justice warriorism that makes no sense at all. It's like those people are completely incapable of understanding that people from different time periods (and/or countries) have different values.

What you're saying is absolutely true, but that doesn't make it any more comfortable. Even though it makes sense given the historical context, it's still something that people just have to cringe at.

All of this. I was once told i was a horrible racist because i really love the GWtW book and movie. Liking either of them doesn't mean i espouse the 'ideals' of the people or the times.

[identity profile] diorama23.livejournal.com 2012-01-29 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
And not only that, her family owned slaves. They had a whole freaking plantation! We're not talking about a character who would have had much to do with the (at the time) liberal abolitionist movement.

This, so much. I actually think that given her time period and upbringing Scarlett is probably as un-rascist as she could reasonably be expected to be. She certainly has a great respect for Mammy, at least, and seems fond of the other slaves/servants (except Prissy but Prissy is annoying so I don't know if you can blame her for that too much).

I actually remember one scene from the book where a Yankee woman refers to a slave as a negro (I think) and Scarlett is actually all offended that a white woman is using the term. At least I think that's what happened, it's been awhile since I read the book.

aah, Scarlet O' Hara, how confused you made me feel. Never have I been so conflicted about a character.

You are amazingly strong in some things, but in other ways you are not only what the OP said, but also weak (the entire romance made me gag, always)

[identity profile] dwell-ondreams.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-28 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
The night I got an email telling me that I could never get back on my course, and I was basically looking at that path being completely closed into the future, the end of Gone with the Wind got me through. I watched a clip from the end of the film a few times, and it actually did help. "Tomorrow is another day".

[identity profile] fairyday.livejournal.com 2012-01-29 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
Oh god yes, I love her so much.

[personal profile] tabaqui 2012-01-29 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Hell yes. Love her. She's even better in the book, imo, because we know so much more of what she's thinking and feeling, and how much of what she does is blind survival and desperation.

Not a *comfortable* book, but a truly good read.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-29 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
IAWTC. She is not a nice, friendly, kind or likeable person, and she suffers for that in many ways, but she is absolutely indomitable. (And to some extent, she is what she was forced to become by the hardships she went through, as well -- she's doing the best she knows how, with the tools she was taught, to keep her own and everyone else's head above water.) If I ever get into a survival situation, I hope I can be half as tough as she is.

[identity profile] fauxkaren.livejournal.com 2012-01-29 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
One of my favorite characters ever. I love her.

[identity profile] lashiec.livejournal.com 2012-01-29 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
Amazing as a character. Great movie overall. Leaves you pretty conflicted on her in particular! I'm happy that my mom loved it intensely and named me after something in it. (Tara, specifically.)

(Anonymous) 2012-01-29 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
Possibly my favorite character in literature, and I think you've basically got her down (though for all her selfishness, she's also strangely loyal to her family, even those she cannot stand).

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2012-01-29 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
I think...that's the idea, right?

yup, exactly this.

(I also really love her relationship with Melanie)
