The whole reaction to the Derpy Hooves thing here on LJ made me sad. Sure, there were people who recognised that it's a problematic inclusion, but there were even more people who, even after having it explained to them, would rather dismiss people's concerns than admit the show could be flawed. You can like a show and still acknowledge it's not perfect, you know?

I know lots of people say "well, I don't use 'derpy' in a way intended to mock people with mental disabilities/didn't know 'derpy' could be used that way, so it's okay, kids won't get it". But kids will get it, and just because (hypothetical) you doesn't use it that way doesn't mean nobody will.

Here in the UK, there's a certain charity that's dedicated to helping children with mental disabilities. A charity. I still remember the charity having to legally change its name, because it's previous name actually became a playground slur, the same way people use "r*tard". Kids recognised that the name was used in association with mentally disabled children, and turned that name iinto something hatred and cruel and meant to hurt. So everyone who says that 'derpy' is a nonsense word and kids won't associate it with anything negative is seriously underestimating children's ability to understand and twist words into their own language.

Also, 'Derpy' the pony seems more like a thick Ralph Wiggum type character with extra clumsy rather than somebody with an actual mental illness. Last I checked, being low on intelligence wasn't an actual disability.

The thing is, I think some people would argue that Ralph is mentally disabled. It's not low intelligence so much that he doesn't react to things the way we might expect and he doesn't seem to understand social situations. He's also been seen wetting himself and has a voice inside his head that tells him to hurt people. But at the end of the day, Ralph is a character on the Simpsons. My Little Pony is aimed much younger, and presents itself as morality tale.

And yeah, I guessed Spastic. I remember that being the go-to insult at school, moreso than retard.

You know what the worst part is? You make things worse. You always focus on the negative. Make up issues. Scream and yell about things that you find insulting but nobody else does.

You are making things worse for people like my brother. For people like me.

My brother has Down Syndrome. He is 34. He works in a library, lives in an assisted apartment, and volunteers his time at the local hospital.

His name is David. I was born with, amongst other things, a severe cleft palate. I couldn't pronounce my brothers name correctly I called him "dipsy" thats how it sounded. To this day he is called "dipsy" people at work, at the place he works, the hospital. It's what he likes. He says "my friends call me."

Some SJ jackass went up to my brother when they heard someone at the library call him "dipsy" this jerk went on and on to my brother about how horrible it was. How mean. The person demanded to speak with the library director about this "injustice".

My brother still gets upset about "that person" he cries. He says "why was that person so mean to--"

Why? I can't answer that.


Why are YOU so damn determined to find fault with everything? To find evil everywhere? To take a simple, innocent and fun moment and twist it into hate.


YOU are doing nothing to help people. Nothing. You are creating hurt, evil and hate where it doesn't exist.

It's not about forcing everyone to be ~PC~, it's about trying to get people to fucking consider how others want to be treated. For your brother it's being called by his nickname, for me and a bunch of others it's NOT being called by ANY name.

1. They are not for people with mental disabilities; mental disabilities is one of the effects of the condition they are most associated with.

2. They are not just for children, but for all disabled people.
