Actually, what we really need is more gay romantic comedies. (-:

THIS.

[identity profile] deadtree.livejournal.com 2012-02-16 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
hear, hear!

YES. x100.

Guh, this so badly.

this

(Anonymous) 2012-02-16 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, and hopefully they can avoid some of the sketchy things a lot of romcoms tend to pass off as harmlessly "romantic."

[identity profile] fenm.livejournal.com 2012-02-16 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
True! But then, I want STRAIGHT romcoms to stop doing that shit, too...

(Anonymous) 2012-02-16 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Absolutely!

(Anonymous) 2012-02-16 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
What kind of things? I don't watch a lot of romcoms.

So far, so good on that front. There aren't a lot of gay romcoms, but the ones I've seen don't stray into the creepy, no really this is romantic and not abusive crap the way straight romcoms tend to.

Heck yeah.

[identity profile] smittenlotus.livejournal.com 2012-02-16 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
Yes please. :3

Also OP, watch Good Luck Chuck or The Ugly Truth. Those are two marketed rom coms that will make you never want to watch another one again, ever.

[identity profile] rosehiptea.livejournal.com 2012-02-16 06:15 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't see it, but I have a friend who actually, unironically liked Good Luck Chuck. Then I saw Film Brain review it on Bad Movie Beatdown. Now I no longer trust my friend's taste in, well, anything.

Came here to say this.

A thousand times yes.

[identity profile] red-pill.livejournal.com 2012-02-17 10:35 am (UTC)(link)
i had never given it much thought befor i read this secret, but this was my first thought when i read it

so seconding this so hard. :3

[identity profile] citrinesunset.livejournal.com 2012-02-16 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
I used to feel the same way.

But in real life, gay relationships can be just as beautiful as straight ones.

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2012-02-16 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh, why? They're terrible. I mean, romcoms. And being queer is awesome.

[identity profile] runonmoonlight.livejournal.com 2012-02-16 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
Have you seen D.E.B.S or But I'm a Cheerleader? I mean they also fall into the realm of total camp, which is a little different from the average romcom. But still :D

[Also, sometimes I want some light hearted gay-fluff. I enjoy my serious stuff, but sometimes I want to see ladies falling in love with other ladies, and there not really being too much angst about it. Unless said angst is because one is a super-spy in a kilt, and one is a super-villian and that is why their love shall-not-be-named.]

So maybe it's not so much rom-coms, but camp-rom-coms? Where they actually seem to be having fun with it :D

[identity profile] shadowpiranha.livejournal.com 2012-02-16 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
Romantic comedies make me want to go on a shooting spree myself.

[identity profile] filed.livejournal.com 2012-02-16 08:03 am (UTC)(link)
This. Also love your userpic.

Romantic comedies make me glad I'm queer. Queer people, whether in same- or opposite-gender relationships, generally have better communication skills and don't do things like assume they are being cheated on because they see their prospective partner hanging out with someone attractive that they don't recognise, or assume that a relationship is monogamous before it is... I'm not saying relationships between queer folks are all perfect and non-dysfunctional, but we tend to use our words when we're not sure what's going on. Also very few people would lose their shit over someone else's "number" and those that did would not be getting the message that it was okay.

Comedies with a romantic theme could be really awesome, gay or straight or otherwise, if the writers could manage to tell stories that wouldn't totally fall apart if:

1) characters communicated with each other and asked each other questions in a polite, non-threatening manner when something looked unusual;

2) characters didn't assume monogamy, let alone ownership, of another person without discussing this beforehand;

3) stalking wasn't treated as evidence of passion and commitment by anyone who isn't an actual 100 year old vampire.

I feel this way sometimes too.
