I'm kinda annoyed how this thread just further perpetrates the culture war-zone being fought on every woman's body.

There is no objective "right" way for someone to look. I can understand being concerned about health, but it's extremely rude to assume that someone is lying when they say "No, I do not have an eating disorder."

I'm naturally very slender with very small breasts and a 24" waist. I have an extremely hyperactive metabolism and I don't regulate what I eat at all. I mostly eat fried chicken and drink soda. Despite these facts, I've had to put up with people telling me daily to eat a burger, accusing me of having an eating disorder, and an ex pressuring me to gain weight and get breast implants.

I've tried all my adult life to gain weight using calorie bars bodybuilders use just to fit into what society considers beautiful. I've made myself sick by overeating attempting to expand my stomach. I've agonized over looking in the mirror and finding flaws and deciding I don't look "womanly" enough.

I would never victimize anyone about their appearance or weight. It's just so frustrating because girls like me are considered acceptable targets because the very tiny minority that is the fashion industry decided our body types were in vogue. Like that gives me some privilege. Women hate me because they want to be thinner and men ignore me because I don't have breasts.

People calling Ioana "horrific" looking and "disgusting" need to get over themselves. That's just rude and unacceptable behavior. Some people just develop bodies that aren't normal. People are born with "deformities" that don't fit into society's ideal body image. To antagonize or criticize someone for their physical appearance is just nasty.

Little girls are not in danger of emulating Ioana's body because her body is considered disgusting by mainstream society. People get eating disorders for various reasons, but usually it's about having some sort of control in their life and/or making themselves more appreciated by people. It isn't as simple as just wanting to be "pretty".

Let's stop policing each others bodies, especially those of women, and learn to accept that sometimes people will naturally look different from your subjective body image ideal.

Thank you!

I'm also thin. I tried to put on weight, not because it was something I wanted to do for myself, but because I wanted people to judging me on the way I look. In the end I stopped caring so much, because I realised people are and always will be morons and that I was actually fine with the way I was.

Still, I can't believe the number of people who think it's socially acceptable to comment on people's weight. I can't count the number of times I've met someone new who's said "gosh, you are so thin!" or had colleagues/acquaintances say "oh hello anon, still skinny as ever!"

Same.
I was very unhappy of my body because even my friends would make rude comments on it. I basically hated myself.
But then I realized that gaining weight would not help the issue because people aren't going to accept your body whatever it looks like. There is this constant message we get that well never be good enough.

I have nothing to add... just... *applauds*

partially c&ping myself above, but: I'm a little bothered by how she seems to gloss over the corset use (or at least, some news outlets are...). Sure, I can believe she has a natural 20-inch waist, but... I don't know how to put this exactly, but it's a little like how when, say, an actress has a baby and only takes a couple months to get back to a pre-pregnancy weight, and when asked about it, replies something about yoga and yogurt while skipping over the likely daily personal trainer/nutritionist/sitter/time to dedicate to it. It's a little... disingenuous? Or maybe it's the pairing I've been seeing of what looks like a corseted pic/video (comparing her pics where she clearly doesn't have one on) without clarifying it, which makes it more a matter of bad/sensationalistic reporting.

You're excellent, and thank you for this comment. This whole thread is depressing me, tbh.

~ please insert a .gif of the world's tiniest violin here ~ There's nothing "natural" about that photograph. That silly thing is corseted up big time.

That still doesn't give you any right to victimize her for her body type.

God forbid a woman choose to have a body type without society's consent and expect to be treated with respect as a human being.

This brings up the issue of women who get a lot of plastic surgery, like Amanda Lepore, and are criticized for going to extremes in their body modification. Yes, you're allowed to dislike someone's stylistic choices in their appearance, however you have no right to accuse someone of being unhealthy or insane because their choices conflict with your personal preferences.

I'm just so sick of people assuming women must have a mental disorder if their body type doesn't fit the social ideal. It's like the new "hysteria" of the late 20th and early 21st centuries.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-19 12:37 pm (UTC)(link)
i don't think it's that people are accusing women who don't exactly fit society's ideal of a "perfect" body of being mentally ill - i think it's when people take it to SUCH an extreme that it's life-threatening or interfering with the way their body naturally works that people start to get a little "wtf?"-y over it. so, no, it's not as if this woman chose a body type that wasn't condoned by society first - it's that people look at her and can clearly see that her body is so, SO far beyond what appears to be normal and healthy, and don't think that it's right for somebody to be pandering this imagine as the perfect ideal.

[identity profile] lady-kinky-chan.livejournal.com 2012-02-20 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
You don't know for a fact that her health is at risk.

She never said anywhere that her body should be the ideal.

She's very aware of how freakish she looks to other people.

I respect your opinion that she LOOKS unhealthy to you, but you have no way of knowing that for a fact.

Everyone's allowed to have different ideas about beauty, but I think accusing people of having unhealthy lifestyles just because of the way they appear to you is unacceptable.

Very well-said.
