Well, they certainly have calories.

That image is positively horrifying.

[identity profile] cloud-riven.livejournal.com 2012-02-18 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
I can't stand the guy's ideas or art, uh, style, but this picture always makes me laugh and then immediately feel bad because it's so unflattering. It's got those creepy Mona Lisa eyes, and that literal, "hey guise wat is goin on this thread :D:D:D:D," expression.

[identity profile] natural-blue-26.livejournal.com 2012-02-17 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Holy God. That's a real (mostly) unphotoshopped human being?! Because that looks like someone getting more than their kidneys stolen and left in a bathtub- that looks like too many vital organs are gone for anyone to still be *living* let alone functioning. The fact that someone's clearly enabling/supporting this woman doing this to herself is appalling to me.

Quick, someone lock her up under medical supervision and start pumping calories, pizza, donuts, frosties, Hell carrots and celery sticks (anything really) into her. Also, may this picture NEVER be shown to any young girl ANYWHERE in the world and told this is attractive.

*is totally horrified*

This article about Ioana seems to offer her point of view, I think it's pretty harsh to quickly decide she's horrifying, I mean clearly she has a very unusual shape but it's not necessarily because she's dying to be skinny.

I'm confused as to how she can even stand upright.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-17 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
1. Is this a secret or an observation?

2. I wish people would stop giving Rob Liefeld shit. I don't like his art either but he gets the insanity of comics. I think people hate him because he shows them what their fantasies really look like and forces them to realize that they're kinda ugly (but are still lots of fun.)

3. Ioana is disgusting. If that's her natural shape then it should be pointed out that she's DEFORMED. Give me all the PC crap about ableism you want. That's not the way a normal person is supposed to look.

I came here expecting shitty commentary about how ~horrifying~ that woman is for having an unconventional body type because people hate women who have the gall to be happy with how they look and not conform to society's bullshit standards

you did not disappoint, fs. please continue being shitty.

Hm... I'm a little bothered by how she seems to gloss over the corset use (or at least, some news outlets are...). Sure, I can believe she has a natural 20-inch waist, but... I don't know how to put this exactly, but it's a little like how when, say, an actress has a baby and only takes a couple months to get back to a pre-pregnancy weight, and when asked about it, replies something about yoga and yogurt while skipping over the likely daily personal trainer/nutritionist/sitter/time to dedicate to it. It's a little... disingenuous?

GOD NO

[identity profile] lady-kinky-chan.livejournal.com 2012-02-18 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
I'm kinda annoyed how this thread just further perpetrates the culture war-zone being fought on every woman's body.

There is no objective "right" way for someone to look. I can understand being concerned about health, but it's extremely rude to assume that someone is lying when they say "No, I do not have an eating disorder."

I'm naturally very slender with very small breasts and a 24" waist. I have an extremely hyperactive metabolism and I don't regulate what I eat at all. I mostly eat fried chicken and drink soda. Despite these facts, I've had to put up with people telling me daily to eat a burger, accusing me of having an eating disorder, and an ex pressuring me to gain weight and get breast implants.

I've tried all my adult life to gain weight using calorie bars bodybuilders use just to fit into what society considers beautiful. I've made myself sick by overeating attempting to expand my stomach. I've agonized over looking in the mirror and finding flaws and deciding I don't look "womanly" enough.

I would never victimize anyone about their appearance or weight. It's just so frustrating because girls like me are considered acceptable targets because the very tiny minority that is the fashion industry decided our body types were in vogue. Like that gives me some privilege. Women hate me because they want to be thinner and men ignore me because I don't have breasts.

People calling Ioana "horrific" looking and "disgusting" need to get over themselves. That's just rude and unacceptable behavior. Some people just develop bodies that aren't normal. People are born with "deformities" that don't fit into society's ideal body image. To antagonize or criticize someone for their physical appearance is just nasty.

Little girls are not in danger of emulating Ioana's body because her body is considered disgusting by mainstream society. People get eating disorders for various reasons, but usually it's about having some sort of control in their life and/or making themselves more appreciated by people. It isn't as simple as just wanting to be "pretty".

Let's stop policing each others bodies, especially those of women, and learn to accept that sometimes people will naturally look different from your subjective body image ideal.

I don't dislike her for the way she looks. I dislike the industry for putting her looks up to be imitated.

I mean, yes, she's obviously deformed, and I'm against ableism, but I don't want her to be put up as a role model representing Beauty for the same reason I wouldn't want people with amputated arm to be the standard of beauty- it could actually lead people to hurt themselves!

She can be proud of her body all she wants. Really, Ioana, go for it. But when it comes to telling young, impressionable women that standard of beauty is to have this usually impossible hourglass figure? In an industry that already encourages being unhealthy thin?
