She's 24. She lives with her parents.

They're paying for her to go to art school.

WHAT? Her parents are paying for it?

Lucky bitch...

She needs a reality check. She has a ton of work to do if she's 24 and her art still looks like that (a semester of still-life drawing classes for starters), and she's not going to escape that "boring retail job" just because she does artwork. Has she never heard the phrase "starving artist"? It's entirely too common for artists to have to supplement their income through part-time jobs.

It's amazing her parents are actually paying for her school when she's old enough to file for financial aid as an independent student, but even that won't last forever. One day she'll be forced to fend for herself, and she'll have to confront the fact that the world isn't woven together from rose petals and diamonds.

I've talked to her about "starving artist," and from her response I think her suburban-youth insulation is so deep she thinks it means you'd have to live in a real small apartment and maybe have only basic cable and a PS2 instead of a 360. I couldn't get it across that when you have no money, you live nowhere and have nothing. And I certainly couldn't explain that even fairly well-known artists are often supplementing their income with full-time jobs.

Someday her parents are going to run out of money or patience, yep, and... well, I work in nursing care of former homeless people, so maybe we'll meet again!

(She mocked me for the nursing job because it's "abandoning my dream." Which is... sort of true, I'd rather be a French-pastry-taste-tester or maybe a professional-Alyson-Hannigan-kisser, but God damn, if everyone lived their dreams we'd have nothing to eat and the toilets wouldn't flush. I don't think getting absolutely everything you want is the only acceptable life goal.)

Holy shit, I am quitting my job and applying for that one.

I'm sure someone, somewhere must have a dream of being the BEST DAMN PLUMBER EVER. if only for the prospect of hearing the voice of a princess calling for help and then busting into a kingdom full of evil turtles and mushrooms for the purposes of Grand Adventure and grabbing coins.
