"my genius, Asperger-ish self"? Really?

[identity profile] havemy-heart.livejournal.com 2012-02-19 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
My thought exactly.

[identity profile] flopflopflop.livejournal.com 2012-02-19 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
This.

[identity profile] stepstostars.livejournal.com 2012-02-19 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
ngl, first thought.

[identity profile] iceyred.livejournal.com 2012-02-19 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I had to read that twice to make sure I got it right.

Hee. They are going to stop diagnosing Asperger's very soon and fold it into autism, which will severely cut down on the number of over-diagnoses. I'll never understand why Aspergers and ADHD are like damned badges of honor round this place. Don't make excuses for yourself. Own up to being an asshole. I do.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-20 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
Badges of honor? Around fandom!secrets? -_- No, more like the minute someone mentions they have it they get called ass-burger by anons and it immediately gets assumed that they're wrongly self-diagnosed and use it for excuses to be a jerk. If I had Asperger's I'd probably be terrified of anyone here finding out.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-20 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
I might be clueless but how is ADD a badge of honor. I've never been diagnosed due to insurance purposes but I show pretty obvious signs of it, and it's never been anything but a headache to me. Not something I'd go around bragging about, and IMO it doesn't exactly excuse anyone's actions either.

[identity profile] aachren.livejournal.com 2012-02-20 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
I've never seen it treated as a badge of honour. Anywhere on the internet.

[identity profile] rabidsamfan.livejournal.com 2012-02-20 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
You know, if someone said to you, "I'm colorblind", you wouldn't expect them to be able to distinguish color clues. You'd take them at their word.

So why, when someone says that they have a condition which makes it hard for them to perceive social clues, are you jumping on them for not being socially adept?

It really isn't helpful.

(And no, I'm nowhere on the autism scale -- I'm just very tired of bullies.)

(Anonymous) 2012-02-20 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
Just to play devil's advocate for a second, I think it's less about the fact that the OP has Asperger's and more about the fact that the OP defines themselves as "genius, Asperger-ish self." The reason why that rubs people the wrong way is because there's quite a few people online who would go around and spout off that they're better than the people around them as well as people who believe that they're better and that they have the right to treat others terribly or cause drama. In other words, that kind of phrasing reminds people of Chris-chan and other noteworthy fans on the spectrum, which I have to agree is unfortunate.

+1

(Anonymous) 2012-02-20 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
This pretty much. It's not the mental disorder, but the ego that's getting people.

[identity profile] rabidsamfan.livejournal.com 2012-02-20 01:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Would you treat everyone in a wheelchair as if they could walk because you knew one person who could get out of the chair and walk for a few yards? Would you treat every person of some race or ethnicity other than your own as a jerk because you knew one person of that race or ethnicity who behaved badly?

Sorry, even as a devil's advocate argument, that one fails.

Besides, the egos you are describing as "rubbing people the wrong way" would never go with an anonymous secret.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-21 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Except you're still missing the point by conveniently not reading the part about the fact that this is about the word "genius." :/

No one's harping on the condition. They're harping on egotists who just happen to have the condition as a side point. Yes, you can still be anonymous and have an ego; lots of people make secrets to get attention because when they read the responses they get, it's reaffirming to them to see people they don't even know support or otherwise react to them. That's why you also see a lot of people going on about how they're BNFs in a fandom. (You could argue that they're going anonymous to hide their identities, but really? If you name the fandom you're a BNF in, it's not that difficult to connect dots and figure out which BNF you are... if you actually are one.)

But that's beside the point. The point is, no, the original comment you were getting at wasn't trying to put down anyone with that particular condition. It was saying that it's just not cool to phrase a secret as if they're trying to be a super-special snowflake. That smacks of using the condition that comes after that word "genius" as a means to get attention. If you have the condition and don't throw around the word, then chances are no one would bat an eyelash. In fact, they'd probably sympathize for you pretty hard. But if you try to say, "I'm super-special because of this, and this gives me license to say that I'm super-special," then people are going to take offense because it sounds like you're trivializing the condition.

Tl;dr, there's a difference between a child in a wheelchair and a screaming brat who used the fact that they're in a wheelchair to get attention. Most people would treat the child in a wheelchair with respect, but sane people would not give the same treatment to the screaming brat. Or in slightly longer words, if you don't make yourself look like a special snowflake for any reason, then the internet won't raise an eyebrow at you. However, this is absolutely no indication whatsoever that the internet thinks everyone who says they have Asperger's or are on the AS are trying to be special snowflakes.

Oh my gosh, I want to hug this comment.

[identity profile] billybobfred0.livejournal.com 2012-02-20 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
Colorblindness is easily imagined. Take normal vision, add a photoshop filter. Done.

A different thought pattern? It's easier to make the bullshit argument that it doesn't exist than to try to comprehend it.

[identity profile] xpaperplanex.livejournal.com 2012-02-20 06:11 am (UTC)(link)
Totally off topic, but I always had trouble imagining what it would be like to be colourblind (my brother is red/green colourblind). Totally feeling the urge to take pictures of everyday things and stick a red/green filter on top in photoshop.
