Hope your new ass is worth the debilitating, deliberately-inflicted brain injuries!

[identity profile] kicktobefamous.livejournal.com 2012-02-21 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
That was my thought, too.

Extras, on the other hand, seems like an interesting place to live.

[identity profile] nochi_san.livejournal.com 2012-02-21 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Ironically, that's the only one I haven't read. xD;

(same person, but not in my Aya account anymore)

Sadly enough, that seems to be the case for a lot of people. Personally, I prefer it, since I find Aya a much more interesting character than Tally, and I find the "what comes next" more interesting than "what happened."

[identity profile] nochi_san.livejournal.com 2012-02-21 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not a case of "do not want" so much as it is "have not found/had the time". It's on my list, it's just that....it's a really long list. xD

[identity profile] sniper-luver.livejournal.com 2012-02-21 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I definitely know about that. My roommate's a librarian for one library system, and I work a block from the main library of another system. We always have tons of books to go through.

[identity profile] rosehiptea.livejournal.com 2012-02-22 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
Unlike many people I liked Extras. I wouldn't want to live there as needing that much social approval would drive me up a tree, but I was very intrigued by the world.

Rude.

But they aren't compulsory to the operation, look at Deigo. They had the operation, but no brain scars. I thought it was fairly heavily implied it was just the Specials at Shay and Tally's home city that added the brain stuff to the operation.

[identity profile] kicktobefamous.livejournal.com 2012-02-22 07:13 am (UTC)(link)
It was my understanding, between Specials and Extras and "Bogus to Bubbly", that all cities had the lesions, but that Tally's city went a bit further than others, especially with their Special Circumstances. The reason that Diego was different was because they'd already gotten the cure. Extras seemed to make it clear that Tally's Mind Rain was the end of the brain lesions.

How are the books? I've really been enjoying Scott Westerfeld's Leviathan trilogy and was wondering if this series was any good.

[identity profile] kicktobefamous.livejournal.com 2012-02-21 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I read Uglies first, and I actually prefer it over Leviathan. It's a much different feel to it, but definitely worth the read.

[identity profile] ketita.livejournal.com 2012-02-21 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm conflicted about them, personally. They have some very cool ideas, but a lot of them wind up being dealt with in an extremely obvious/heavy handed way. Also, Our Heroine gets WAY too much of the special stuff heaped on her; I think the series would have worked far better had their been a new heroine for each book, as opposed to every book discovering something new and fancy and inflicting it on the same character.
Overall, I would say they're interesting, I don't regret reading them, but I'm not sure I could quite rec them wholeheartedly, because there are some serious writing/story/character building flaws that really detracted for me.

/2 cents

[identity profile] whitepawn-alice.livejournal.com 2012-02-22 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
I really enjoy them; light post-apoclyptic, and cool technology. T

[identity profile] whitepawn-alice.livejournal.com 2012-02-22 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
(ugh hit enter too soon) The fourth book has a special place in my heart, since I have a fascination with sci-fi/technological body-mods. I'd say they're worth a read!

[identity profile] oflittlebrain.livejournal.com 2012-02-22 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
i think they are really stupid and dumb in retrospect

then again, i'm pretty much over scott westerfeld in general. he's just... not very good...

[identity profile] three-sixth.livejournal.com 2012-02-22 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
I enjoyed the second and third books. The first book is rather predictable. The forth book doesn't even have the same protagonist.

For a series about appearance, it doesn't really examine the issue. If you want a light read, I would read it. If you want a new favourite series, I would try something else.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-22 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
They were very interesting in dealing with the idea of human-made destruction of natural resources. Underneath the mind-control/government-withheld information, the whole idea is that the government is trying to reduce wastefulness and keep people happy. So you're conflicted between whether being free is really better.

I didn't read them in order, but I liked the first and fourth books. The second and third were a bit confusing, honestly. The protagonist is very reluctant and is pretty much forced into doing everything all because she befriends the wrong people. You kind of want to smack her for being so dumb. A light read, where the world-building is more interesting than the rather cliche plot.

Ugh, this.

(minor spoilers below - tried to be a bit vague)

And then at the end of each book it's like everything she learned from that book is reset, and the plot restarts from scratch over and over.

[identity profile] visitingparis.livejournal.com 2012-02-21 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I kind of get where you're coming from. But think about it. Where's the fun in a world where everyone is generically pretty? You would have absolutely no diversity. You'd be taking away what makes you, well, you. Being pretty doesn't fix everything either. There are plenty of people that are widely accepted as gorgeous and beautiful and whatnot, but they still struggle with insecurities. Maybe you need to find your own beauty (inside and out).

(Anonymous) 2012-02-22 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
For me, it was when it talked about how the operation makes you thin. As someone who's been called ugly, and who has always been self conscious of my weight, that sounds amazing. Plus the technology they get to play with sounds so cool -- I'd miss reading though.

[identity profile] three-sixth.livejournal.com 2012-02-22 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
I think having everyone at the same standard of "pretty" would be a good equalizer, but then you get into the fact that appearance shouldn't matter. Also, operations would make a person society's standard of pretty, which is not necessarily a healthy image.

I'd enjoy body modification at that scale, so I could direct how I want to look.

[identity profile] nyxelestia.livejournal.com 2012-02-22 02:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't care about the Pretty surgery either way - I just want to play with all the technology described in the books! :D
