How are the books? I've really been enjoying Scott Westerfeld's Leviathan trilogy and was wondering if this series was any good.

I read Uglies first, and I actually prefer it over Leviathan. It's a much different feel to it, but definitely worth the read.

I'm conflicted about them, personally. They have some very cool ideas, but a lot of them wind up being dealt with in an extremely obvious/heavy handed way. Also, Our Heroine gets WAY too much of the special stuff heaped on her; I think the series would have worked far better had their been a new heroine for each book, as opposed to every book discovering something new and fancy and inflicting it on the same character.
Overall, I would say they're interesting, I don't regret reading them, but I'm not sure I could quite rec them wholeheartedly, because there are some serious writing/story/character building flaws that really detracted for me.

/2 cents

I really enjoy them; light post-apoclyptic, and cool technology. T

(ugh hit enter too soon) The fourth book has a special place in my heart, since I have a fascination with sci-fi/technological body-mods. I'd say they're worth a read!

i think they are really stupid and dumb in retrospect

then again, i'm pretty much over scott westerfeld in general. he's just... not very good...

[identity profile] three-sixth.livejournal.com 2012-02-22 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
I enjoyed the second and third books. The first book is rather predictable. The forth book doesn't even have the same protagonist.

For a series about appearance, it doesn't really examine the issue. If you want a light read, I would read it. If you want a new favourite series, I would try something else.

They were very interesting in dealing with the idea of human-made destruction of natural resources. Underneath the mind-control/government-withheld information, the whole idea is that the government is trying to reduce wastefulness and keep people happy. So you're conflicted between whether being free is really better.

I didn't read them in order, but I liked the first and fourth books. The second and third were a bit confusing, honestly. The protagonist is very reluctant and is pretty much forced into doing everything all because she befriends the wrong people. You kind of want to smack her for being so dumb. A light read, where the world-building is more interesting than the rather cliche plot.

Ugh, this.

(minor spoilers below - tried to be a bit vague)

And then at the end of each book it's like everything she learned from that book is reset, and the plot restarts from scratch over and over.
