I giggled, I admit it.

Don't quote me, but I think it comes from the expression "nutty as a fruitcake". Nutty has been used as a synonym for insane since the mid 1800s (or thereabouts) and I guess that over time different expressions surrounding that have sprung up. Hence terms like nutter, nuthead, nutjob, etc.

I once called my brother "numbnut" and he flipped his shit at me for being so vulgar~ and offensive~ xD He was thinking about his OTHER nuts in that case, and I was too amused to correct him.

To be honest, I always thought "numbnuts" referred to the other nuts as well. ...Though that could be because my brother is in the army and when he and his cronies use it, it does. :D
