Wait, what's wrong with "crazy"?

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2012-02-21 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
It's offensive to people who are mentally ill, such as those who are bipolar, or have schizophrenia among other things- those were just the two that I remember clearly.

[identity profile] lovelycudy.livejournal.com 2012-02-21 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Even if you are not using it as an insult toward people but just saying "that party was crazy" or something like that?

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2012-02-21 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Depends on who reads it, and where you're posting. Like, there's one forum where the word wasn't allowed at all because it was offensive, even though the blog was going to have Azula from AtLA show up at one point, and she's... Well, kind of crazy.

I've never watched AtLA so I couldn't know. But the place thing makes sense.

...But...But..."Crazula" was the best fandom nickname! Like, ever!

No, I'm not being sarcastic, either. "Crazula" was perfect.

Yes. The Mark Reads/Mark Watches sites are particularly annoying about this, I've found. "It's been driving me crazy that..." Nope, offensive! "So she's wearing this crazy hat..." Nope, offensive! "So he gets all crazy-jealous..." Nope, offensive! "I was drinking through this crazy straw..." Nope, offensive! Okay, I may have made that last one up, but I sort of want to try using it on the site just to see if the hammer comes down on me as it has for the other uses.

As far as I'm concerned, they can fuck right off. If this is the level at which you're offended by language, it is officially your problem, not mine.

[identity profile] lovelycudy.livejournal.com 2012-02-22 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
That's the place that makes Buffy reviews, right?

I used to use "crazy" a lot, and it was pointed out that it bothers some people. I still use it as a self-identifier, because, well, they can pry that out of my cold dead hands, but...

It really wasn't that difficult to replace (going by your examples) "this is driving me crazy" with "this is bothering/upsetting me" or "she's wearing this ridiculous hat" or "he gets seriously jealous" or ... okay, I'm not sure what else you'd call a crazy straw. But the rest, it really doesn't take that long to substitute a word. :-\

More precisely, it can be considered to be offensive to people who are mentally ill. I've never found it so and have even used it to describe myself, and I've heard a lot of mentally ill people do the same.

It really does depend on the context - although that matters little to the rabid SJW people who have told me to be offended by it (most of them with no kind of mental illness whatsoever).

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2012-02-21 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you for the correction, you are spot on.

I would not say it if someone specifically asked me to in a specific context, but I'm not going to wipe it from my vocabulary completely, as I've run into many people who aren't offended by it, though SJW's claim that they "should" be. :/

ext_81845: the character ray person from generation kill, squinting and smiling/smirking (yeah... no.)

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2012-02-22 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
I have never met a person in real life who had a mental illness (including myself, close friends and several members of my immediate family) who was offended by someone using the term "crazy" in a general sense. Maybe if they used it to make fun of someone who had a mental illness directly, but just using it in a general sense like "that party last night was crazy" or whatever -- no

Anyway cue a bunch of people who chime in and say I'm trying to speak on their behalf or that I am claiming to speak for every mentally ill person anywhere instead of just speaking from my personal experience

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2012-02-22 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Y'all sound awesome. I mean, yeah, using it to make fun of people isn't cool IMO, but just the word isn't harmful, I don't think. :/

Here's to hoping it doesn't happen.

[identity profile] rosehiptea.livejournal.com 2012-02-22 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
This. I have a mental illness, and I might not like it if someone said "My brother went crazy and they took him to the crazy house," (wouldn't ruin my day, but I might not like it.) But other than that I don't really notice the word crazy and it doesn't bother me. And I definitely use it to say things like "that's a crazy idea," or whatever.

Obviously if it offends someone then it does and I can't and won't sit here and say they're wrong, but when it comes up as a Thing in discussions I just wish it wouldn't.

(Then again I once sat around in the entry hall of the hospital with a guy singing "I Wanna Be Sedated" so clearly I have a different level of offended than some people.)

(Anonymous) 2012-02-22 07:21 am (UTC)(link)
IA. I have schizophrenia and depression, and the word 'crazy' has never bothered me because I have a mental illness. I am not 'crazy'. And it saddens me when people say the word 'crazy' is ableist or shouldn't be used in fear of offending those with mental illnesses, because it only reminds me that there are people out there associating the word 'crazy' with my mental illness.

I'm only speaking for myself here, but someone saying 'that part was crazy' or 'he's acting crazy!' isn't offensive to me. However someone saying 'don't use the word crazy because it's offensive to those with mental illnesses' is offensive to me, because (as I said) it associates my mental illness with 'craziness'. And that isn't what my mental illness is about. I'm not a 'crazy' person, I don't act 'crazy'.

'Crazy' reminds me of characters like The Joker. And that's not something I want to be associated with.

I'm mentally ill, and I can't say it bothers me. But it does bother others, though, so I try to avoid using it, because I don't like hurting people.

The only time where it really does bother me is when people link violence and insanity, because the idea that all violent people must be crazy (which often gets switched vice versa) is seriously harmful to people with mental illnesses.

[identity profile] fuchsiascreams.livejournal.com 2012-02-23 03:44 pm (UTC)(link)
for srs. When you say it, "STOP TRYING TO SPEAK OVER REAL VICTIMS OF MENTAL ILLNESS", and "ANECDATA =/= FACT", but when THEY do it, they're just trying to give a voice to all of the potential people who we are victimizing by using that word! And THEIR individual experiences count for everything!

[identity profile] strangetwn-god.livejournal.com 2012-02-21 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
As a high-functioning madman, I fully approve of judicious use of "crazy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bd2B6SjMh_w)," "insane (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oGrOqhQvDC4)" and even "nuts (http://youtu.be/tL2pG4BqyOU)."

[identity profile] lovelycudy.livejournal.com 2012-02-21 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
"Nuts" is nice. I like how it sounds. I wonder where it comes from, though.
