EDIT: I went to find the actual policy:
"3) No use of any pejorative slurs allowed in any context EXCEPT when you are quoting something or explaining about its usage in culture. You are allowed to use them to talk ABOUT them, but are not allowed to USE them to talk. Deal? Deal.
Quite a few people have still managed to use slurs on this site, despite that I have even addressed said slurs in my reviews! So, can we all PLEASE strip “crazy” and “lame” from our vocabularies on this site immediately? And if you are called on it, please stop and MOVE ON. No defending your use of those words."
Yep, "crazy" is the same as "lame", and thus it cannot be used to describe anyone, not even Azula.

I mean, it has forced me to think more critically about what I am trying to express in order to find other words to use. But that's not a bad thing.

No, it's not a bad thing to think critically, but to equate words like "crazy" with words pejorative insults is another matter. I mean, if you're talking about other people, not cool. But, say, in Avatar? Using crazy to describe Azula is IMO a very apt term, because she seems neuro-typical in most respects until the ending, but she acts in ways that are sound, if a bit, well, crazy, and out there, and I would not wish to ascribe to her any sort of non-neurotypical diagnosis to explain away the way she acts, as that is not my place.
Azula. She's just crazy. Crazy awesome, crazy cruel, and in the end, crazy sad.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-22 04:51 am (UTC)(link)Good examples being "dumb" (as part of "deaf and dumb") where it historically meant that the person was mute when we were talking about Anne Frank in school, I was confused because I just thought it meant someone stupid (and I wasn't allowed to call my brother any variation of stupid). Despite "dumb" having both dictionary definitions, most people use it as an insult that doesn't involve the other party being silent. I think the spirit of this thread is that people are taking SJ too far in some cases and are looking for excuses to be upset and bemoan anything that makes them different and thus sensitive.
It's like
Person A: Wow, I really like that neat picture!
Person B: Liquor is served neat and I'm a recovering alcoholic! I can't believe you'd mention that to me!
And while I agree if you visit as site, you follow its rules, it's not about "thinking more critically", because sometimes you're using terms colloquially in an OBVIOUS manner as to which definition is appropriate. No intent to insult is given and suddenly you're blindsided by people rushing to insist you are an asshole because someone, somewhere is different and might possibly think you meant the term as a pejorative against them.
