Even if you are not using it as an insult toward people but just saying "that party was crazy" or something like that?

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2012-02-21 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Depends on who reads it, and where you're posting. Like, there's one forum where the word wasn't allowed at all because it was offensive, even though the blog was going to have Azula from AtLA show up at one point, and she's... Well, kind of crazy.
Edited 2012-02-21 23:28 (UTC)

[identity profile] lovelycudy.livejournal.com 2012-02-21 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I've never watched AtLA so I couldn't know. But the place thing makes sense.

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2012-02-21 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Fair point. :)

Yeah, I mean, I won't say it if someone specifically asks me too online, but dammit! I like that word! And stupid! And hell, I even like "bitch" sometimes, because it's so sharp and 'tch'y and it sounds so strong and I love it, but I try not to use it online because it's more fun to say than to type.

I just think sometimes a molehill is just a molehill...

[identity profile] otakugal15.livejournal.com 2012-02-22 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Dude, I LOVE the word bitch. And I'll probably get dogpiled for it. But I don't see the word anywhere NEAR as badly used as say, "cunt." Cunt being used as an insult leaves me feeling very uncomfortable. Bitch does not.

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2012-02-22 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
I don't either, tbh. The C word (yes I don't even like typing it) gives me stupid little shivers as I hate it, and how it sounds. nt is just too harsh, but bitch! Oh glorious bitch with your tch and your harsh b, I do love thee!

[identity profile] kindlycoyote.livejournal.com 2012-02-22 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. And you know what? Sometimes I just end up shrugging and going 'you can't please everyone' and moving on. For heavens sakes, my family is literally crazy and i frequently use the word to describe myself and them and everything. My uncle who is bi-polar calls himself crazy, and laughs.

Every now and then I think there are words people just need to grow thicker skin with, as the intent is obviously not offensive (in most cases). Also, I think these people should just come out and say 'no insults are ok ever', because at least that position would make some kind of fucking sense rather than this pick-and-choose stupidity.

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2012-02-22 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with all of this comment, actually. :)

[identity profile] fuchsiascreams.livejournal.com 2012-02-23 03:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I'M OFFENDED THAT YOU USED THE WORD "STUPID", THERE MIGHT BE A RELATIVELY UNINTELLIGENT PERSON IN HERE READING THIS COMMENT YOU KNOW

[identity profile] dorknessrising.livejournal.com 2012-02-22 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
...But...But..."Crazula" was the best fandom nickname! Like, ever!

No, I'm not being sarcastic, either. "Crazula" was perfect.

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2012-02-22 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
I know, right? It's literally perfect for her! She's nuts

[identity profile] dorknessrising.livejournal.com 2012-02-22 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
I wonder if the people who forbid the word "crazy" hate Iroh, then.

This thought makes me sad =/

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2012-02-22 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, the person I'm thinking of specifically loved Iroh, IIRC.

But crazy is still a Bad Word that Must Not be Said at All. Ever.

[identity profile] dorknessrising.livejournal.com 2012-02-22 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
See, that's funny. Because it was Iroh who said of Azula "she's crazy, and she needs to go down."

Oh, internet. Never change!

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2012-02-22 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Well, see, if it's a character who's saying it, that's different. Or something.

I'm not actually sure.

EDIT: I went to find the actual policy:

"3) No use of any pejorative slurs allowed in any context EXCEPT when you are quoting something or explaining about its usage in culture. You are allowed to use them to talk ABOUT them, but are not allowed to USE them to talk. Deal? Deal.

Quite a few people have still managed to use slurs on this site, despite that I have even addressed said slurs in my reviews! So, can we all PLEASE strip “crazy” and “lame” from our vocabularies on this site immediately? And if you are called on it, please stop and MOVE ON. No defending your use of those words."

Yep, "crazy" is the same as "lame", and thus it cannot be used to describe anyone, not even Azula.
Edited 2012-02-22 00:38 (UTC)

[identity profile] dorknessrising.livejournal.com 2012-02-22 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, that's messed up. Because if Azula isn't the definition of "crazy", I don't know what is.

Seriously, the entry in the dictionary should just have her face next to it.

*using this 'cause it's the only Azula icon I have*

Idk. I just don't find it to be that huge of a personal sacrifice to not use the words "crazy" or "lame" on his sites for the sake of not potentially making other people feel uncomfortable, and I'll enforce Mark's policies. I guess I just don't see what the big deal is. Like why is it such a hardship to just not use a few words on one site?

I mean, it has forced me to think more critically about what I am trying to express in order to find other words to use. But that's not a bad thing.

Yes. The Mark Reads/Mark Watches sites are particularly annoying about this, I've found. "It's been driving me crazy that..." Nope, offensive! "So she's wearing this crazy hat..." Nope, offensive! "So he gets all crazy-jealous..." Nope, offensive! "I was drinking through this crazy straw..." Nope, offensive! Okay, I may have made that last one up, but I sort of want to try using it on the site just to see if the hammer comes down on me as it has for the other uses.

As far as I'm concerned, they can fuck right off. If this is the level at which you're offended by language, it is officially your problem, not mine.

[identity profile] lovelycudy.livejournal.com 2012-02-22 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
That's the place that makes Buffy reviews, right?

[identity profile] fauxkaren.livejournal.com 2012-02-22 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
He's going through Buffy right now, yes.

[identity profile] lovelycudy.livejournal.com 2012-02-22 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks.

[identity profile] dinerstate.livejournal.com 2012-02-22 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly that's one of the reasons why I stopped reading his reviews. \: I just couldn't deal.

I used to use "crazy" a lot, and it was pointed out that it bothers some people. I still use it as a self-identifier, because, well, they can pry that out of my cold dead hands, but...

It really wasn't that difficult to replace (going by your examples) "this is driving me crazy" with "this is bothering/upsetting me" or "she's wearing this ridiculous hat" or "he gets seriously jealous" or ... okay, I'm not sure what else you'd call a crazy straw. But the rest, it really doesn't take that long to substitute a word. :-\

(Anonymous) 2012-02-23 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Absurdity straw, lol.

[identity profile] fuchsiascreams.livejournal.com 2012-02-23 03:30 pm (UTC)(link)
agree. Although I've also been yelled at for using the word "crazy" to refer to myself. I dunno, I guess cause some people get offended when someone else calls themselves crazy..?
