oh cry some more about it, we'll start giving a shit once society stops pushing women out of absolutely everything else.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-07 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
You know we can vote now, right? We can even wear pants.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-07 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
Wait, we can wear pants? Dammit, how did I not get this memo?

I find that picture to be positively scandalous. Flashing her ankles around like that - a proper lady would never be so bold.

... the OP didn't imply that women should stop participating in fandom, just that they felt left out because they weren't a woman. I don't see anything wrong with making fandom a welcoming place for everyone.

It's fine making fandom a friendly place for everyone, it's just that men coming into female-dominated spaces need to know that it is not okay to suddenly demand that everything cater to their interests, (http://www.nomorelost.org/2011/03/25/straight-male-gamer-told-to-get-over-it-by-bioware/) or call women weird for shipping people and writing/reading fanfiction. Both points which I totally agree with and understand, as I am a woman and have had to deal with those things firsthand. Anyone--male or not--coming into fandom spaces and belittling people and making them feel weird or wrong for something they enjoy is not something that I approve of, and anyone who does it is a complete and total asshat.

There is a difference, though, between saying that guys shouldn't come into female dominated fandom spaces and expect to be treated like special snowflakes and adored when they act like complete and total douches while they try to co-opt female-oriented spaces and what I was saying. Which is that the OP said they felt a bit left out of fandom because they're not a woman. They did not say that fandom should change. They did not say that there was anything wrong with the way that fandom is currently run. They did not in any way imply that shipping or fanfiction were weird or wrong. They also did not say that they were even male. I'm not sure why they feel left out of fandom because they're not female, but I don't see anything inherently wrong with expressing that, and I don't think it's cool to burst off comments like the one that I replied to that basically amount to, "well, people are shitty to me outside of fandom for being female, so I'm going to tell you to just GTFO out of fandom and quit whining if people are shitty to you inside of fandom because you're not female". And I'm sorry, but no. That does not fly with me.

Anon, I am with all of this comment. :)

It's a good creed: All genders are welcome in fandom; arseholes are not.

[identity profile] intrigueing.livejournal.com 2012-03-07 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Oh shut up. Being an asshole to guys does not empower you in any way. It just makes you look like an asshole, and I'd appreciate you not appropriating my entire gender into your assholery with your presumptive use of "we". Seriously, do people only praise Martin Luther King out of habit nowadays? Because this trend towards "I refuse to treat other people well as long as there are people who don't treat me well" just angers the fuck out of me.

+1

What she said.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-07 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
So much this. I am so, so tired of this type of attitude. I have to put up with it from both other women and other people in the queer community and it gets extremely tiring. Especially when a lot of people with this type of attitude seem to think that anyone who's not all for the hate-slinging are somehow a tool of the heterosexual patriarchy. No, I just don't enjoy being an unmitigated asshole to people out of some warped sense of justice.

This doesn't have to be a zero-sum game, you know.
