ia, tbh. one thing that never fails to turn me into a giant green rage monster is when people dismiss a film/book/show because they don't get it. as in "the plot was too complicated to follow therefore it sucks". no, you're just an idiot.

i nearly wept with joy after watching 'ttss' because it was finally a film that didn't pander to the audience and explain things. it was engaging, it was a CHALLENGE, and i appreciate that.

This. There's nothing wrong with saying you don't like something because you don't get it. There really isn't. But saying the book/tv show/movie is dumb because *you* don't get it... Gah.

Oh my God this comment is perfection. Thank you!!

See, and I just think this is a really obtuse way to communicate with people. You're letting semantics get in the way of conversation. Because what's being said by "this is dumb"? "I don't like it." Maybe you don't like the phrasing that was chosen, but to act like the person saying that is speaking factually for the whole world just seems like splitting hairs to me.

I don't mean to split hairs. It's just I've just encountered quite a few people who continually use that particular method of expressing their opinions on things. Instead of simply saying the story in question wasn't to their liking, or they didn't get every detail, they always say it's dumb. It gets tiring.

I disagree. Saying something is dumb or stupid is marking it with a judgment value, that purports to be objective. It also has the effect of disregarding other people's enjoyment, like if they enjoyed it, they must enjoy dumb things. Whereas saying I don't like it, only makes a comment about the person saying it.

I get what you're saying. It's possible "This is dumb" = "I don't like it" But I think you're underestimating how much people actually mean, "and you are kinda dumb/ are pretentious/have bad taste," when "It's dumb" comes after someone else saying "I really liked it."

^^^ THIS.

Yeah, if people weren't such dicks about their own taste it would be pointless to split hairs this way. But people *do* treat their opinion as fact and negatively judge people for having different tastes.

It's not good to DISMISS something entirely because you don't get it, but it doesn't make a person an idiot if they didn't. I thought that TTSS was extremely hard to follow for a lot of legitimate storytelling reasons (characters appear and disappear for long stretches of time and then become highly important, names are not well established so it's difficult to tell who the characters are talking about often, many things that are relevant to the outcome being given too little time, or what I like to call "adaptationitis") and WAS hard to follow for a lot of people. If you were able to follow it, that's great, but it's not like people didn't get it because it was "too smart" or "too deep". They didn't get it because the storytelling was confusing, which IS a completely valid reason to dislike a film.
